रस्सी से भी पतली दिखती है चोटी तो इस तेल में मिलाकर लगाएं बस 2 चीजें, बाल हो सकते हैं मोटे | Thin Hair Home Remedies

Apply Coconut Oil, Methi And Curry Leaves On Thin Hair

'India Got It Wrong...': Gambhir, Suryakumar Slammed For Making This Blunder

Team India made a mess of its run chase of 172 against England in the third T20I in Rajkot, suffering defeat by 26 runs in the end. India lost wickets at regular intervals and their batting slowed down considerably in the middle overs, as Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel failed to accelerate. India opted to go with a left-right combination at all stages, which saw Dhruv Jurel walk in to bat at No. 8. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen criticised the approach chosen by India.

Pietersen batted for the promotion of Dhruv Jurel in the batting order, speaking highly of his batting credentials.

"India didn't get the batting order right. Dhruv Jurel is an accomplished batter. Having him lower down the order for the left and right combination was not right. I'm a firm believer in your best batters batting up front," Pietersen said, speaking after the match on Star Sports.

Washington Sundar (6 off 15) and Axar Patel (15 off 16) both operated at a strike rate of under 100, while Hardik Pandya did the same for the most part and only accelerated unsuccessfully late on, making 40 off 35.

It meant that Jurel walked in to bat in the 18th over, and failed to fire, scoring just 2 runs off four balls.

This was India's first loss in a T20I in five games. Despite a good bowling effort, the 10th-wicket partnership between Adil Rashid and Mark Wood put up 24, helping England to a respectable 174.

India lost their top four batters inside the first 10 overs, with Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and captain Suryakumar Yadav departing inside the powerplay. India were unable to cope with the early loss of wickets, as England tightened the screws in the middle overs.

India next take on England in the fourth T20I on Friday, January 31, at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Opinion: Is Trump Serious About Annexing Canada? Or Is He Just Being Trump?

Years ago, during my one and only trip to Pakistan to report on the 50th anniversary of independence for a Western media outlet, I had the pleasure of meeting some bright, articulate students at the famed Government College in Lahore. Feeling magnanimous (and admittedly swept by their genuine warmth), I decided to drop a bombshell of an idea: why not reunite India and Pakistan? Should we not right the wrongs of Partition, restore the subcontinent to its undivided glory, and perhaps save on visa fees?

Their reaction shook me up no end. Polite smiles laced with a palpable ‘what-is-this-guy-talking-about?'. Most of them agreed that Partition was a disaster—but, they were quick to add, not their disaster. The blame, they insisted, lay squarely with the Urdu-speaking folks, many of whom had fled to Karachi and now live as 'muhajir' (immigrants). One student practically bristled at my proposal and said my suggestion reeked of a “typical Indian response” from the post-Partition generation, which was a rather diplomatic way of calling me naïve. I get it.

From their post-Partition Pakistani perspective, the students argued, reunification was a no-go. Sure, their country wasn't perfect—admittedly not on a par with India—but it was their own. Sovereign, independent, and, crucially, theirs to nurture or mess up, without unsolicited advice from nostalgic neighbours across the border. The message was clear: the idea of negating Partition, no matter how silly they thought it was, wasn't up for debate. Period.

It was a perspective that had never crossed my Indian-bred mind. It reminded me of the shock Canadians are feeling at President Donald Trump's latest shenanigan—his not-so-casual declaration that he would like to annex Canada and turn it into America's 51st state. Last week, Trump, always a fan of the spotlight, used an international platform to float the idea. Addressing the Davos economic forum via video link, he coolly tossed out the notion to an audience of CEOs and business honchos. Predictably, gasps echoed through the room. And somewhere in Ottawa, I imagine, jaws hit the floor.

What's surprising isn't just the audacity of Trump's suggestion but the sheer persistence of it. His rhetorical swipes at Canada's independence have become so frequent that one wonders if he is genuinely serious or just bored with his neighbours.

The US-Canada overlap is everywhere—from culture to sports to shared traditions. Neighbours for sure, but they are more like squabbling siblings. In 2023, the US-Canada trade hit over a trillion dollars, with $2.8 billion crossing their border every single day. They are each other's biggest trade partners, with Canada sending 78% of its goods and services to the US every year, and over 4,00,000 people moving across their shared 5,525-mile border daily.

'No, Thanks'

The reactions to Trump's comments range from polite Canadian indignation to outright laughter. Meanwhile, Americans seem split between “Wait, can we actually do that?” and “Why would we even want to?”. Let's unpack these views:

Recently, BuzzFeed ran an article that asked Canadians about their thoughts on Trump's eyebrow-raising proposal to annex Canada as America's 51st state. Unsurprisingly, the responses were a mixed bag, though they leaned heavily towards a polite but firm “No, thanks”. Here's what some of them had to say:

  • "I do not want to be American. No one I know wants to be American. I am not giving up my free healthcare and strict gun laws. And I am definitely not giving up my right to choose as a woman."
  • "I would rather take my son on a vacation to Europe for fear of our safety in the US. Your lax gun laws make me afraid that we could be shot while vacationing in any part of your country."
  • "We are not America. We never will be. In fact, I think America would benefit from a more Canadian viewpoint."
  • "Americans would be better off joining Canada than Canadians would be joining the USA."

And then, of course, there were those I would call ‘dissenters'. Their voices often stemmed from frustration with their own Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, rather than an overwhelming love for Trump's America. A few highlights:

  • "Ask me 15 years ago, and I would have been ready to take up arms against any US threat; now, I'm not sure. The Liberal government, led by Trudeau, has divided and nearly destroyed our culture with 'woke ideology'."
  • "I would be the first one to vote to become part of the United States."
  • "I would be over the moon to become an American. The US is the greatest country in the world. Canada has been riding their coattails for years. To be annexed into the US would be a dream come true."

Their enthusiasm must be appreciated. Sure, they might get Florida, but they are also signing up for the 'Florida Man'. And they are happy with it. However, in the end, while some Canadians may be open to the idea of annexation, the overwhelming sentiment seems to be, “Thanks, but we're good.”

The American public, it seems, isn't exactly rolling out the red carpet for Trump's latest brainwave. Surveys by The Wall Street Journal, Reuters-Ipsos and The Economist-YouGov—all conducted in recent days—indicate that the idea of annexing Canada is about as popular as a snowstorm in July. So, we must keep in mind that Trump's land of the free isn't exactly clamouring for a new northern star on its flag after all.

A Rare Precedent

Annexing a nation without a war is a rare feat, but history offers a few eyebrow-raising precedents that might bolster Trump's audacious ambitions. Consider Texas in 1845: the Republic of Texas willingly joined the United States after breaking free from Mexico. Then there was Hawaii in 1898, annexed through a joint resolution of Congress following the not-so-gentle overthrow of its monarchy. Both cases, of course, were dripping with controversy and tangled in political gymnastics.

If President Trump were to actually chase his dream of annexing Canada as the 51st state, he would be plunging into a legal and political minefield. For starters, Canada's Constitution is as silent as a winter morning on how a province—or the entire nation, for that matter—could secede and join another country. On the flip side, the US Constitution does allow for new states to join with Congressional approval, but annexing a fully sovereign country is uncharted territory, legally speaking.

Then there's the political and populist angle. Agreed that Trump's statement might strike a chord with certain populist audiences. But the logistics of such an annexation are a Herculean challenge. The deeply entrenched national identities and legal frameworks on both sides of the border make this idea more rhetorical than realistic.

Into Trump's Mind

Trump himself drops plenty of hints about how he views his annexation dream. "Are you also considering military force to annex and acquire Canada?" a reporter asked him recently. “No. Economic force,” he said promptly. “Canada and the United States, that would really be something. You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security. Don't forget, we basically protect Canada.”

Justin Trudeau, who is stepping down as Canada's prime minister, didn't hold back on X, retorting: “There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.” Elon Musk on the other hand, ever eager to stir the pot, responded sarcastically: “Girl, you're not the governor of Canada anymore, so doesn't matter what you say.”

The banter may be entertaining, but the stakes of such a suggestion are no laughing matter. This is the kind of rhetoric that can tiptoe dangerously close to turning political theatre into a real diplomatic crisis.

Rohit Captains ICC Men's T20I Team Of The Year, 4 Indians Make The Cut

Rohit Sharma was elected as the captain of the ICC T20I Team of the Year for 2024, after leading India to a second T20 World Cup title in the year. Despite poor form in Test cricket, Rohit won his first piece of ICC silverware as India captain, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament as well. Three other Indians featured in the ICC XI, in the form of pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Tournament of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Travis Head was selected to open alongside Rohit Sharma, while Phil Salt was also included in the XI, as the No. 3 batter.

Head amassed 255 runs in seven games at the T20 World Cup, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer. The Australian had a superb 2024, and also made his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Phil Salt hit three T20I centuries in 2024, and found a spot in the ICC XI.

Nicholas Pooran was the highest run-scorer across T20s in 2024, amassing over 2,000 runs, and was chosen as the wicket-keeper in the XI. Pakistan stalwart Babar Azam also found a spot, having scored 738 runs in 23 innings, despite not having the best T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza, India's Hardik Pandya and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan were selected as the all-rounders in the team. Pandya was arguably the best all-rounder in the T20 World Cup, while Rashid led Afghanistan to a historic first semi-final.

Bumrah had a phenomenal T20 World Cup 2024, picking up 15 wickets, while Arshdeep was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 17. The latter picked up 36 wickets in 18 games in 2024.

Alongside Rashid Khan, Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga was selected as the other spinner in the ICC T20I Team of the Year.

Samson's Father Drops New Bombshell, Reveals Dravid's 'Jealous' Remark

Sanju Samson has been dominating headlines recently due to his ongoing feud with the Kerala Cricket Association. Following his Champions Trophy 2025 snub, the KCA said that he was not included in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad after he skipped a preparatory camp and even asked him of 'lacking discipline'. Samson's father, Viswanath, has accused KCA of trying to end his son's career and recalled how Rahul Dravid played a key role in not letting that happen. Viswanath revealed that when Samson was 11 years old, Dravid intervened and even asked that people were jealous of him.

"I will tell you one incident about Rahul Dravid. When KCA had tried to disregard Sanju and destroy his career, Dravid ji had interfered in the matter. Wherever Sanju is at today, he owes it to Rahul Dravid. I have not forgotten anyone who has given us warmth and generosity. When action was being taken against Samson, they had given up his kit and everything else. Then, one day, we were all sad and sitting at home when Sanju got a call from Rahul sir. Sanju was overjoyed. He picked up the phone crying. The mood in the house was sombre," Samson Viswanath said on Sports Today.

"After keeping down the phone, he told me 'it was Rahul sir'. He said 'Sanju, I understand all that is happening with you. They are all jealous of you. Tu chinta mat kar (Don't worry). Don't get your morale down. I have taken care of it. You keep training and get ready for NCA'. He operated at a level higher than the KCA and took Sanju under his wings," he added.

In the first match of the ongoing T20I series, India won the toss and elected to field. England lost wickets at regular intervals, with only skipper Jos Buttler (68 off 44 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) putting up a fight for the Three Lions. England was restricted to 132 in 20 overs.

Chakravarthy (3/23) was the top wicket-taker for India, while Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel each took two wickets.

In the run-chase, Sanju Samson (26 off 20 balls, with four boundaries and a six) put on a 41-run stand with Abhishek Sharma (79 off 34 balls, with five fours and eight sixes), who single-handedly led India to victory with seven wickets and 43 balls to spare.

Varun Chakravarthy was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his stellar bowling performance.

$5,000 To Join Facebook, Instagram: How Meta Is Wooing TikTokers in US

With the shadow of a tumultuous ban still looming over TikTok in the United States, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is offering to pay a large sum of money to popular content creators on the "third party" social media app who join Facebook and Instagram. The company said select creators will get up to a $5,000 bonus if they post content on Meta platforms for over three months.

On its website, Meta said the influences who get accepted into the so-called "Breakthrough bonus programme" will be paid the money during their first 90 days on the app, so long as they post regularly. They will get the cash based on "an evaluation of your social presence.

By sharing content across Meta's platforms, creators will also get access to Facebook's content monetization program that enables users to earn additional income from their posts. In addition to the bonuses, Meta is also offering these popular faces a free trial of Meta Verified-- the sought-after blue checkmark that provides exclusive features and helps accounts stand out. Normally, this feature comes at a monthly cost ranging from $15 to $120.

Meta Going After TikTokers?

Though Meta did not say the tempting cash offer was exclusively for TikTokers, it came just days after the rival platform was removed from US app stores. Though President Donald Trump delayed the short video app's departure from the US market by 75 days, TikTok still remains unavailable to download from app stores.

The timing of Meta's offer suggests it is attempting to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding the ByteDance-owned platform's users.

According to TikTok, it has 170 million users in the US - many of whose livelihood depends on its survival. This means a lot of people would be looking for an alternative platform to establish themselves if the Chinese company disappeared.

This is not Meta's first move to go after ByteDance's users. Earlier on Sunday, the firm announced an app called "Edits" which shared striking similarities with ByteDance's CapCut-- a video editing app which went offline when the ByteDance ban took effect on January 19.

Meta has also launched a "new affiliate link experience" for users' "shoppable content"-- a system where Meta users will be able to add prominent affiliate links directly on their videos - rather than in the comments - just like how it works on TikTok.

But, perhaps the most visible influence of TikTok is seen in how Instagram looks. After the new update, posts and videos on Instagram are now appearing rectangular, like on TikTok.

How Will NextGen Bar Exam Change The Lawyer Licensing Test In The US

With an aim to eliminate rote learning and develop a focus on practical skills, United States has decided to adopt NextGen Bar Exam by July 2026. The National Conference of Bar Examiners will replace the current Bar exam in the US with the Next Generation (NextGen) Bar exam from next year. The exam will evaluate candidates' knowledge in nine legal subjects including constitutional law,  criminal law and civil procedure and also test their skills in seven foundational fields such as legal writing, negotiation and client counselling.

As per Reuters, "The NextGen bar exam is the first major redesign of the national lawyer licensing test in 25 years. The National Conference of Bar Examiners began developing it in 2021 with the goal of creating a test that emphasizes legal skills and relies less on the memorization of laws."

The NextGen exam will do away with the three separate components of the current test — the 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam, the Multistate Essay Exam and the Multistate Performance Test. It will also be shorter, at nine hours, compared with the current 12-hour test, and will be given entirely on computers.

Unlike the previous exam, the exam is designed to enhance the practical skills and knowledge that will be required by newly licensed attorney. The exam will comprise of diverse question formats, including integrated scenarios and performance tasks. The states are adopting the new format to align the legal education with the evolving demands of the profession. The exam will be administered in one and half days. The current bar exam spans over  two days and focusses on theoretical knowledge.

Saif Ali Khan Discharged From Hospital, 6 Days After He Was Stabbed At Home

Actor Saif Ali Khan has been discharged from Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, six days after he was seriously injured in a knife attack during a burglary attempt at his Bandra home. Currently, the discharge formalities are being carried out and actor is expected to walk out shortly. The 54-year-old actor's mother and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore is with him. Mr Khan's wife and actor Kareena Kapoor Khan was at the hospital but left for home a short while back. Mr Khan, it is learnt, has been advised complete bed rest for a week and asked not to receive visitors to prevent any infection.

Heavy force has been deployed at the hospital as well as Mr Khan's residence as people have started gathering at both places to catch a glimpse of the popular actor.

In an incident that shocked the nation and raised questions on Mumbai's law and order situation, the actor suffered six stab injuries when a man who broke into his home attacked him with a knife. The actor, bleeding heavily from his wounds, was rushed to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw late on Wednesday night. One of the injuries was on his spine and doctors said the knife missed his spinal cord by just 2 mm. The spinal fluid, however, had leaked out and a surgery was conducted to fix this. The actor also underwent plastic surgery for injuries on his arm and neck.

Eliyama Philip, who looks for Saif Ali Khan's sons Taimur and Jeh, has told police that she was the first to spot the intruder. She has said she was woken up by some noises around 2 am. She saw the bathroom door ajar and the light on and assumed that Kareena Kapoor Khan was checking on Jeh.

"... then I went back to sleep but, again, I realised something was wrong. So I woke up again and saw a man come out of the bathroom and go into the boy's room. I quickly got up and went to Jeh's room. The attacker then put his finger near his mouth and said 'Don't make any noise, nobody will go out' in Hindi," Ms Philip said.

"When I rushed to pick up Jeh, the man, armed with a wooden stick and a long Hexa blade. ran towards me and tried attacking me. I tried to block the attack by putting my hand forward, but the blade hit me near the wrists of both my hands and on the middle finger of my left hand. At that time, I asked him, 'What do you want?'. He said, 'I want money.' I asked, 'How much do you want?' He said in English, 'one crore'," Ms Philip has said in her statement.

Hearing Ms Philip scream, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan rushed out of their room. When Mr Khan asked the intruder what he wanted, he attacked him with a wooden object and the hexa blade, Ms Philip said. "Saif Sir somehow managed to get away from him and we all ran out of the room and pulled the door of the room," she said, adding that everyone then went to the upper floor of their home. The intruder later escaped, she said.

Police have arrested Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who illegally entered India and had been living under the false name Bijoy Das, for allegedly breaking into actor the actor's home and attacking him. Earlier today, the accused was brought to Mr Khan's Bandra residence to recreate the crime as part of the investigation.

Donald Trump's Inauguration Celebrations Kick Off: Venue, Guest List And More

Donald Trump, who is set to take charge as the 47th President of the United States of America, reached Washington on Sunday morning, ahead of his inauguration ceremony marking his return to the White House. The incoming President's inaugural weekend began with a star-studded 500-member reception at the Trump National Golf Club in Virginia, which included his cabinet nominees Pete Hegseth and Lee Zeldin.

The incoming commander-in-chief posted a nearly 15-minute video from the event showcasing him and First Lady Melania standing beside each other on a balcony at his golf club and applauding the massive pyrotechnic display. Towards the end of the video, the soon-to-be President can be seen shaking his leg and performing one of his signature dance moves in front of the crowd.

Trump Inauguration Gala Details

Celebrations Start -Mr Trump's inaugural ceremony includes 18 galas, with three official events that the Present-elect is expected to attend. The celebrations kicked off with a gala at Trump National Golf Club in Virginia on Sunday. Following this, the President-elect arrived in Washington DC, where he's expected to participate in a rally and a candlelit dinner with supporters today.

On Sunday alone, Mr Trump is scheduled to hold a major "Make America Great Again Victory Rally" at Capital One Arena for his supporters. This will be the first such event in the US capital that Mr Trump will address since his speech at the Ellipse on January 6, 2021, which led to the Capital riots. Later in the evening, he is also scheduled to attend a candlelight dinner with his supporters.

The Inauguration Ceremony-  Mr Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States at 12 pm EST (10:30 pm IST) on Monday as the US Constitution mandates that each new president's term begins at noon on January 20 (or the day after if it falls on a Sunday). The oath is most often administered by the Supreme Court chief justice, and Monday would mark John Roberts's second time officiating for Trump.

The First Address- The new president is then expected to deliver an inaugural address, laying out his plans for the next four years. The Republican rang in his first term in 2017 by evoking "American carnage." Incoming vice president JD Vance will also be sworn in during the event.

Inaugural Luncheon- Following the ceremony, the President, along with their spouse, Vice President, Senate leaders, and distinguished guests, would be escorted to Statuary Hall in the US Capitol for a celebratory luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC).

Oval Office Signings- In the first act as the President after taking the oath, Mr Trump is likely to participate in a traditional signing of executive orders, officially beginning his second administration. The incoming President has pledged to fulfil a number of his poll promises on Day 1 by signing executive orders, but it is not clear what issues will be first up. Mr Trump is likely to reinstate some executive orders from his first term that President Biden had revoked.

Inaugural Balls- The signing in the Oval Office will be followed by three official inaugural balls on Monday evening. Mr Trump is expected to attend all three galas -- the Commander in Chief Ball, the Liberty Ball and the Starlight Ball. More than a dozen other events are also planned.

National Prayer Service- Mr Trump will be hosted by the Washington National Cathedral, the sexy day after his inauguration at 11 am (9:30 pm IST) on Tuesday for an interfaith prayer service. The service will mark the official conclusion of the inauguration celebrations.

Change In Swearing-In Venue

While US presidents traditionally assume their powers outdoors in front of the Capitol building, with a large crowd of spectators witnessing the ceremony, Mr Trump on Friday said he would move the event inside the Capitol Rotunda amid forecasts of extreme cold.

Crowd size is a preoccupation of  Mr Trump's, but the last-minute switch to an indoor event may dent his bragging rights. More than 220,000 tickets were being distributed to the public before the incoming President's announcement of shifting the venue to the Capitol Rotunda, which can accommodate only about 600 people.

Trump said supporters could watch a live feed from Washington's Capital One sports arena, which holds up to 20,000 -- and he promised to drop in later. "This will be a very beautiful experience for all," the president-elect said.

Presidential Parade

The president's inaugural parade will be held inside for the first since 1985. The parade, which has followed the presidential entourage down Pennsylvania Avenue as far back as 1805, will march on inside Capital One Arena on Monday.

The move comes after Mr Trump on Friday announced that he would take oath and deliver his inaugural address inside the US Capitol Rotunda and promoted Capital One Arena as essentially a massive watch party venue for his oath of office and inaugural address

Musical Affair

Mr Trump's inauguration 2.0 will be a star-studded affair, with country star Carrie Underwood singing "America the Beautiful" during the swearing-in ceremony.

Also performing will be country singer Lee Greenwood, whose patriotic anthem "God Bless the USA" is standard at Trump rallies.

A pre-inauguration rally on Sunday will include a performance by the Village People, whose 1970s-era "Y.M.C.A." is another Trump event staple, in addition to Kid Rock and Billy Ray Cyrus. Country musicians including Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts and Gavin DeGraw plus the Village People will perform across Trump's three official inaugural balls.

Inaugural Lunch

The event became an integral part of the day's events in 1897, when the Senate Committee on Arrangements arranged a meal for President William McKinley, symbolizing the transition of power and the beginning of a new administration.

The menu for Donald Trump's 2025 Inaugural Luncheon has not been revealed yet, but it is likely to follow patterns of previous occasions and may include the great American classic cuisines. As Mr Trump reportedly enjoys simple, savoury meals, he might include steak with some lobster, together with exquisite sweets. The Gulf shrimp and regional American flavours were part of his inauguration in 2017.

Guest List

The Republican has invited a number of tech titans to attend the inauguration, joining more traditional guests such as his cabinet nominees. Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg will attend as will Shou Chew, the head of Chinese social media giant TikTok, according to US media.

Mr Trump has courted closer ties with the tech moguls, and his campaign benefited from disinformation spread on social media platforms such as TikTok, Musk's X and Zuckerberg's Facebook and Instagram.

Outgoing President Joe Biden will also attend the ceremony -- despite Trump's refusal to appear at Biden's swearing-in when he beat Trump in 2020. All living former presidents -- Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama -- will attend, as will their wives, except for Michelle Obama.

That means Hillary Clinton, whom Trump beat in the 2016 presidential election, in addition to Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he beat in November, will be there.

Heads of state are not traditionally invited, but Trump has sent invitations to a handful of foreign leaders, including some who share his right-wing politics. Far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will attend, her office confirmed Saturday.

Hungary's Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Milei and China's Xi Jinping have also been invited, but not all will attend.

Executive Orders

Mr Trump said he is preparing to sign multiple executive orders as early as his first day in office, aimed at undoing many of the Biden administration's policies.

Among other promises, he has pledged to launch a mass deportation program and increase oil drilling. He has also said he might immediately begin pardoning January 6 rioters, his followers who ransacked the Capitol in 2021. Immediately after the inauguration a meeting is planned between US officials and foreign ministers from Japan, India and Australia, the so-called "Quad" which the Biden administration saw as a counterweight to an assertive China.

Opinion: Is There A Saudi Cameo In The Israel-Hamas Deal?

If talks go well, the death machines will fall silent in West Asia, or at least Gaza, on Sunday. The US and Qatar have reportedly brokered a deal between Israel and Hamas to end the war.

It's been a long wait for the misery to end. The killings began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas fighters from Gaza attacked Israel on a Jewish holiday. They went about indiscriminately shooting and kidnapping unsuspecting civilians and some soldiers. The worst attack was on a music festival where hundreds of young Israelis were partying. All of it streamed live by the attackers' body-mounted cameras. By the time Israeli forces took out the last gunmen, the body count had topped 1,200. Over 250 hostages were carried across to Gaza to be stashed away in a subterranean maze where they remained undiscovered even after the whole house was burnt down.

Perhaps the most dramatic and horrific cross-border assault on any country since the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008, it triggered such a display of overwhelming force that it left the world aghast. The shockwaves have left the regional map perceptibly different. It has riven apart communities and split institutions. The scars run so deep that they will not heal in a very long time. It has also laid bare the remarkable pragmatism bordering on chutzpah of the Arab nations.

Reduced To Rubble

According to multiple reports, nearly 46,000 Gazans, a substantial number of them women and children, have perished in the 15-month war. Most of Gaza has been flattened and rendered uninhabitable. Israel is estimated to have demolished over 1,61,600 homes and damaged 1,94,000 other civil structures. More than 1.9 million of the 2.2 million Gazans have become refugees, most of them corralled into a tiny corner in the north of the Strip. More than 1,000 medical facilities have been destroyed; Rafah does not have a single hospital. The economic loss is estimated at $37 billion.

Hamas was decapitated when its political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, where he had gone to attend the inauguration ceremony for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Its director of war, Yahya Sinwar, was killed in Gaza last year, just after the first anniversary of the Hamas attack. A video of a dying Sinwar defiantly throwing a piece of wood at an Israeli military drone indicated that Hamas would not back down despite the carnage. By the end of 2024, Israel had spent over $67 billion on war. It had cost the United States nearly $23 billion until September 2024. Yet, about a hundred Israelis remain hostages somewhere in the ruins, or, more likely, under the ground.

The Deal

So, what is the new acceptable middle ground in the new deal that the failed talks since the first successful one in November of 2023 could not find? After all, the original objective of the war—freeing hostages—was not achieved. Not only that, Israel will release over 1,000 Palestinians, including those arrested after October 7 and presumably Hamas fighters, in a prisoner exchange. That means while thousands of innocent Gazans, including women and children, paid for the Hamas attack with their lives, its fighters may yet return, alive, prison-hardened, and ready to fight another day.

On December 20, 2024, American journalist Seymour Hersh—famous for blowing the lid off a cover-up of a massacre of the villagers of My Lai in Vietnam by US troops in the 1960s—wrote that an Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal was in the works. The contours of the just-announced deal are nearly identical to that in his report.  One crucial piece of information, which was not in the deal made public but available in Hersh's Israeli source-based account, was the role of Saudi Arabia and the quid pro quos. Hersh wrote that as per the deal—reportedly made possible after incoming US President Donald Trump shook his fist at the belligerent Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—the US would extend its nuclear umbrella to Saudi Arabia if Iran gets hold of a nuke. In return, Saudi will fund the reconstruction of Gaza, look away when Israeli warplanes raid Syria, and allow its once-arch rival access to an airfield inside its territory.

When Iran hit Israel with a barrage of missiles after it assassinated Hezbollah leader Nasrallah and killed scores of others in a “pager attack”, Tel Aviv had to precisely plan its retaliation because of the distance its fighter planes would have had to cover to reach targets deep inside enemy territory. Those targets would be minutes away if the planes were to launch from Saudi Arabia, however. So, the Israeli hostages, who have now spent over 460 days in captivity, paid the price for Tel Aviv to have a closer shot at Iran.

The Aftermath

Almost all conflicts in West Asia in the past over 50 years somehow link back to the Palestine issue and a still-pending two-state solution. Palestine-trained activists and revolutionaries helped overthrow the Shah in Iran in 1979. That regime has since helped create multiple armed groups in the region, including Hezbollah, Hamas and Houthis.

While the Saudi aspect—if it exists—of the ceasefire deal may eventually be revealed, it is clear that the US and major powers in the Gulf have decided to militarily ring-fence Iran. While the regime change in Syria with tacit support from Turkey has broken the Iran-Russia supply-and-support link, Israel has crushed Hamas in Palestine and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel, the US and the UK have jointly carried out air raids on the Yemen-based Houthis, another Iran-backed group, whose attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea have disrupted global trade. What would be next? A regime change in Iran? Perhaps that will be property tycoon-turned-diplomat Steve Witkoff's next assignment.

Opinion: Trump's Return Has Exposed Europe's Weaknesses

Europe had experienced a great deal of heat from Donald Trump during his first term as president. He had cast doubt on the continuing relevance of NATO, viewed it as a financial burden on the US because the Europeans were not spending enough on their own defence, and demanded that they spend 2% of their GDP on defence. He showed his disdain towards the EU by supporting Brexit.

The belief that Russia had interfered in the US presidential election in Trump's favour had created misgivings that he might pursue a more flexible policy towards Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. His right-wing, nationalistic political orientation clashed with Europe's left-leaning liberalism. His Make America Great Again (MAGA) slogan created anxiety as it was considered inward-looking, protectionist and tending towards isolationism. European politicians were concluding that Europe and Trump's America no longer shared the same values.

Can Europe Cope?

Trump has now come back to power with a thumping majority. The Republicans have also won control of both houses of the US Congress. Trump is undoubtedly convinced that his re-election, despite all the legal and other efforts of the Democrats to disqualify and prevent him from fighting the election, has vindicated his proclaimed domestic and foreign policy agendas. Europe and others will have to cope with the unpredictability, impetuousness and self-assertion of this maverick president.

Trump, even before his inauguration, has put Europe under stress by his power play in questioning the continent's territorial integrity by laying claim to Greenland. During his first term, too, he had laid his eyes on Greenland, but this time ,he is brazen about acquiring it on grounds of “national security” and access to its natural resources such as oil, gas, lithium etc. Trump has threatened to pursue his claim with economic coercion or use of force, if necessary, as he considers ownership of Greenland an “absolute necessity”.

The president-elect clearly wants the US to become a major Arctic power in anticipation of the melting of the Arctic ice, which would open up a vital trade route between Europe/Asia and the Americas and allow mining of the oceans' rich resources of oil, gas and other minerals as well. At present, Russia dominates the Arctic geographically, and China is eyeing it too for its potential for trade connectivity. This is reminiscent of the ruthless great power politics of the 19th century.

This attack on Europe's territorial integrity puts Europe against the wall. Its dependence on the US for its security provides it no real option to resist. The response of European leaders has been to temporise and avoid challenging Trump head-on. The Danish prime minister recognises America's “security concerns”, while also stating that Greenland is not up for sale. The US already has a military base in Greenland, which can be expanded, and hence, the argument of security concerns seems debatable. The autonomous Greenland government has made hedging statements. The German Chancellor has resorted to a non-specific statement to the effect that the “inviolability of borders applies to all”. The French foreign minister has avoided mentioning the US by name while remarking that the EU would “not let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are”.

Lost For Answers

The European Commission has refused to “go into the specifics” when asked to comment on Trump's claims. Van der Leyen, the head of the European Commission and Antonia Costa, the head of the European Council, stated evasively that the “EU will always protect our citizens and the integrity of our democracies and freedoms” and, rather pointlessly, that “we look forward to a positive engagement with the incoming US administration, based on our common values and shared interests. In a rough world, Europe and the US are stronger together”.

Europe is embarrassed and does not quite know how to respond adequately. Its geopolitical weakness has been exposed, diminishing its status as a collective power. It sees itself threatened by Russian power from the East and now by American power from the West—one an enemy and the other an ally. In Russia's case—which is unlike that of the US seeking to seize Greenland—it is not a territory belonging to an EU state that is being annexed or under threat of annexation. The message from all this is that Europe is unable to look after its own security. It depends on US-led NATO for protection, but it is the leader of NATO that is weakening NATO solidarity, with an uncomfortable message that Trump's America sees Europe as quasi-dispensable.

A Double Bind

The quandary for Europe is that if it were to react strongly and decide to condemn the US territorial bid, it would need an internal consensus, and seeking one could divide NATO. The NATO edifice, which is considered vital for Europe's security by member states, especially in East and Central Europe, could well begin to crack, given Trump's known disdain for the transatlantic alliance. A strong anti-US reaction could also weaken Europe politically against Russia. Europe's no-holds-barred discourse against Russia for seeking to annex the territory of a sovereign state and allegedly altering the map of Europe for the first time since the Second World War, as against a compliant attitude towards the US for a somewhat similar goal, could well become unsustainable.

Europe's problem is that it cannot build its security simply on the basis of countries increasing their defence budgets individually. The smaller European countries—and there are many—increasing their defence budgets means little. To be autonomously secure, Europe needs to rely on its own arms industry, European countries to buy European-produced arms, and Europe to have some kind of a centralised European chain of command. This will require a deepening of the EU as a sovereign entity, on which there is no political consensus amongst Europeans.

As things are, European security has remained frozen in the Cold War matrix, with Russia being an enduring threat and the US standing as a bulwark against it. Although France and the UK are nuclear powers, their nuclear umbrellas are not politically acceptable to many European countries. They would prefer to rely only on the US nuclear umbrella, especially in the face of Russia's formidable nuclear arsenal.

Narrative Wars

European public opinion could get confused if tensions between the EU and the US over the Greenland issue become acrimonious, and could well begin to affect public attitudes towards Russia, with mounting support for some compromise with Russia over Ukraine instead of a complete refusal to engage in a dialogue with Moscow. The discourse, in some circles, could well turn into one of US imperialism versus Russian imperialism.

On the Ukraine issue, Trump's repeated declarations on engaging in a dialogue with Russia to find a solution, the statement by the incoming US National Security Adviser that Russia cannot be expelled from all the territory it holds, and the implied message that Ukraine will have to yield territory, as well as talk of arranging a Trump-Putin meeting, are huge political blows to Europe, whose leadership has persistently demonised Russia and Putin and closed doors to any dialogue with Moscow. Trump is upending Europe's position of complete alignment with the Biden administration's position on the Ukraine conflict. There is reported concern in Brussels that Trump may lift some sanctions on Russia as part of a potential deal.

Other than security issues, Trump's presidency could increase economic pressures on the EU. This will come in addition to the economic costs paid by the EU because of Ukraine-related economic sanctions on Russia. During his first term, Trump had targeted Germany for its mercantilist trade policies. Germany's current economic woes add to Europe's vulnerability to US economic pressures.

Clash Of Values

Trump's personal deep antipathy to ‘wokeism', DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and gender identity issues will be another clash of “values” with Europe. Elon Musk, who is amplifying many of Trump's political and social views, has already become a major headache for the European political class. He is openly interfering in European politics by, for instance, supporting the right-wing nationalist party (AfD) in Germany, and the right-wing Reform Party in the UK. He has brutally targeted prime minister Keith Starmer on the “grooming gangs” scandal, calling him “complicit in the rape of Britain”. Vice-president-elect J.D.Vance has also attacked the UK over not suppressing Islamism in the country. Trump Jr has joined in criticising the Labour Party too. This bodes ill for the US-UK special relationship.

All in all, Europe's dependence on the US and its limited margin of manoeuvre have been brutally exposed with Trump's coming ascension to the White House.

Vlogger Sits On Top Of Moving Ford Mustang In Gurugram, Lands In Custody

A vlogger in Gurugram sat on a moving car's bonnet to make videos for his social media accounts, landing him and his accomplices in police custody.

Videos were shot by Krishna, whose social media handles are named Babajani Vlogs, and his team at the underpass near the Rapid Metro station in Gurugram's Cyber City. While the resident of Gurugram's Chhakkarpur village sat on the bonnet of a red Ford Mustang, his team shot the video from a Scorpio.

As the reel went viral on social media, it also came to the notice of the police. Krishna and his team were traced by the DLF Phase 1 police based on the vehicles' registration numbers.

While Krishna and his team of three were rounded up by the police, the two vehicles were also seized. Later, Krishna apologised on video and urged people not to be influenced by his stunts.

Opinion: This Is How Much Tax India's Middle Class Really Pays

As Budget Day approaches, the debate over how the middle class, particularly the salaried class, bears the country's tax burden has gained momentum. With only a small number of individual taxpayers shouldering most of the weight, calls for much-needed relief have grown louder.

The number of tax returns filed by individuals has more than doubled, from 3.35 crore in 2013-14 to 7.54 crore in 2023-24. However, many individuals file zero-tax returns merely for compliance purposes. The number of individuals filing zero-income tax returns has also more than doubled, from 1.69 crore to 4.73 crore during the same period. On the other hand, the number of individuals actually paying income taxes has increased from 1.66 crore in 2013-14 to 2.81 crore in 2023-24.

In September 2019, the government announced a reduction in the base corporate tax rate for existing companies to 22% (from 30%) and for new manufacturing firms incorporated after October 1, 2019, to 15% (from 25%). Following this announcement, corporate income tax (CIT) collections have fallen relative to personal income tax (PIT) collections. The PIT-to-CIT ratio, which was 0.7x from 2000-10 to 2019-20, has increased to 1.1x from 2020-21 to 2024-25 (budgeted).

Corporate income tax collections have grown from Rs. 5.56 lakh crore in 2019-20 to Rs. 10.2 lakh crore in 2024-25, an increase of 83%. During the same period, personal income tax collection grew from Rs. 4.92 lakh crore to Rs. 11.87 lakh crore, an increase of 141%.

Individuals Contribute Generously To GST

Annual GST collections in India range from Rs. 18 lakh crore to Rs. 20 lakh crore. The government does not provide a breakdown showing the respective shares of individuals and corporations in this pie. But, since corporations can claim input tax credits for goods or services purchased for business purposes, the majority of GST collections are accounted for by individuals.

Five states account for more than half of the total GST collections. Maharashtra holds the largest share at 21.2%, followed by Karnataka at 9.3%, Gujarat at 8.4%, and Tamil Nadu at 8.2%. Uttar Pradesh ranks fifth, with a share of 6.8% in 2023. All of these states except Uttar Pradesh have urbanisation levels higher than the national average of 31.1%, according to the 2011 census. This effectively means that GST collections are higher in urban areas, where India's middle class predominantly resides.

The Extent Of The Actual Tax Burden

Three examples illustrate the heavy burden the middle class shoulders.

  • For an individual who earns Rs. 10 lakh and saves 30% (the national savings rate), the tax outgo, assuming an average GST rate of 15% on consumption, could be close to Rs. 1.6 lakh. That is 16% of the total income. If the same person saves 15% of their income, the outgo would be 18%, and 20% if there is no saving at all.
  • If an individual earns Rs. 20 lakh in income and saves 30%, assuming an average GST rate on their expenditure of 18%, he will pay Rs. 3.1 lakh in income tax under the new tax regime and Rs. 2 lakh in GST on consumption expenditure. The total tax paid would be Rs. 5.1 lakh, or 25% of the income. If this person saves 15%, the total tax burden would come to around  28%, and, in case of no savings, it will be closer to 31%.
  • Assuming an individual earns Rs. 1 crore and saves 30%, then, with an average GST rate of 23% on consumption expenditure, the tax burden, both direct and indirect, will be nearly Rs 40 lakh, or 40% of the income. If the same person saves 15%, the tax incidence will go up to 43%, and, in case of no savings, the burden will shoot up to 47%.

The middle class has long been treated as a cash cow by successive governments, and there is a growing demand for fair treatment, including tax breaks, incentives for vehicle and home purchases, and parity with corporations in terms of deductions. At a time when household savings are at their lowest and wage increases by corporations are insufficient to cover inflation, some relief is warranted for the middle class.
