"Noisy Sunroof, Screen Lags": Actor Wants 50 Crores For "Faulty" Land Rover

Bollywood actor Rimi Sen has sued car company Land Rover for Rs 50 crore for allegedly facing issues with her car. Ms Sen purchased the car for Rs 92 lakh in 2020. In her complaint, she accused Land Rover of mental harassment over repairs related to the car.

The vehicle was purchased from Satish Motors Pvt. Ltd., an authorised dealer for Jaguar Land Rover, with a warranty valid until January 2023. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, the car remained largely unused until restrictions were lifted. When Ms Sen began using the vehicle extensively, she allegedly encountered numerous defects. These included issues with the sunroof, sound system, and rear-end camera.

In her complaint, Ms Sen claimed that on August 25 in 2022 the malfunctioning rear-end camera led to the car colliding with a pillar. Despite notifying the dealers about these issues, Ms Sen claims that they were dismissive, asking for evidence before addressing her complaints. This led to a cycle of repairs where one problem was allegedly fixed, only for another to arise.

The legal notice filed by Ms Sen claims that the car is defective, both in manufacturing and in its subsequent maintenance by the authorised dealer. She contends that the car has been sent for repairs over ten times, yet it remains faulty, causing her mental harassment and significant inconvenience.

Ms Sen is demanding compensation of Rs 50 crore for the mental harassment she endured, as well as an additional Rs 10 lakh to cover legal expenses. She also seeks the replacement of the defective car.

Bangladesh Cricket Board Takes Decision On Shakib Amid Murder Case Row

Team Bangladesh is celebrating it's historic 10-wicket win against Pakistan in the first Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi. It was Bangladesh's first-ever win against Pakistan in a Test match. Amid the series, Bangladesh Cricket Board had received a legal notice to call back and ban star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, as he has been accused in a murder case. The case was reportedly filed by Rafiqul Islam whose son Rubel was killed on August 7 amid the ongoing protests in Bangladesh.

BCB president Faruque Ahmed had stated that the board will be taking on decision on Shakib after the end of the first Test. In the latest development, it has been reported by Cricbuzz that the BCB has allowed Shakib to go ahead in the series.

"He [Shakib] will continue playing. We received a legal notice regarding bringing him back and we replied them saying this [that he will continue to play]," BCB president Faruque Ahmed was quoted in a leading Bengali Daily Prothom Alo on Tuesday.

"Right now the FIR is filed and it is in the initial stage and there are lot of steps after this and until he is proven guilty we will make him play. The Bangladesh team will go to India after the Pakistan series and we want him in that series as well. He is our contracted player and if necessary we will give him legal assistance," he added.

The second Test will conclude on September 3 but Shakib will not return home as he is bound to travel to England to participate in a four-day match for Surrey. He has also received an NOC for the same from the Bangladesh board.

"He [Shakib] has not played red-ball cricket for a while and that is why we have given him an NOC to play for Surrey as it will help him to adjust with red-ball cricket more than anything else," a BCB official confirmed Cricbuzz on Tuesday.

Following this, Shakib will also be seen in the two-match Test series against India, kick-starting from September 19.

Kamala Harris Or Donald Trump? Why One US County Matters Most In US Polls

Voters in Maricopa County, the largest in the US swing state of Arizona, will play a key role in deciding whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins the White House in November.

Here are five key facts about the county:

America's hottest big city

Maricopa County is home to Phoenix, Arizona's state capital, where the average high temperature exceeds 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius) for four months of the year.

The sun-drenched metropolis was named in the late 19th century after being founded on the ruins of an ancient native civilization. The small settlement, located in the northern Sonoran Desert, was worth just $550 after the US Civil War.

Irrigation helped Phoenix grow from a sleepy frontier town dotted with saguaro cacti into a center for citrus, cattle and cotton. Its hot, arid climate later made it an attraction for tuberculosis patients.

After World War II, immigrants, retirees and young families seeking warm weather and low costs flocked to the area, dramatically increasing the population thanks in part to the advent of air conditioning.

Phoenix is now the nation's fifth-largest by population, surpassing Philadelphia. More than 1.6 million Americans live in the financial services and manufacturing hub, according to the latest US Census.

Historically Republican

The county -- home to about 4.5 million people, or 62 percent of Arizona's population -- is the second-largest voting jurisdiction in the country, and was until recently a reliable Republican stronghold.

"The real significant election, I think, was in 2016 when Trump took the county just by three percentage points. Four years earlier, it was taken by Mitt Romney by 11 points," said David Berman, professor emeritus of political science at Arizona State University.

President Joe Biden beat Trump in Maricopa County by more than 45,000 votes in 2020, helping him break a nearly eight-decade winning streak for Republican presidential candidates in Arizona.

Berman said Trump's right-wing agenda has alienated some Arizonans who prefer more centrist Republicans, such as late US senator John McCain.

Hispanic population growing

The Hispanic population in Maricopa County has grown to account for nearly a third of all residents, according to the latest census.

That change is part of a larger trend spurred in part by rising immigration. Between 2010 and 2020, Arizona's Hispanic residents increased by 16 percent -- faster than the state's overall population growth.

"There has been a concentrated effort to bring out the Hispanic vote as well as the Native American vote," Berman said of the groups, which tend to vote Democratic.

He added that there have also been "some gains for Democrats" as people seeking cheaper housing and better job opportunities continue to move to Arizona from more traditionally liberal states such as California.

Increasingly independent

Despite Arizona's Republican voting history and recent Democratic inroads, more than a third of Maricopa County residents are not affiliated with either party.

Roughly 34 percent of active voters are registered as "other," according to the county's most recent data -- rivaling Republicans at 35 percent and surpassing Democrats at 28 percent.

That proportion has grown steadily over the past few years, making the county's election results more unpredictable.

"Maricopa County still has quite a bit of red in it, and these swing voters will generally opt for more traditional Republicans," rather than Trump's hard-right brand, said Paul Bentz, senior vice president at Phoenix-based public affairs firm Highground.

"We are not a purple state," he said, referring to an area evenly mixed between Republican red and Democratic blue.

"We are a red state with purple spots."

Early voting dominates

About 80 percent of the county's voters cast early ballots in 2020 and 2022, mirroring a statewide trend that predates the coronavirus pandemic.

"We've been doing it for over three decades. Republicans are really the ones that brought early voting to the state of Arizona," Bentz said.

In 1991, the state legislature allowed voters to request an absentee ballot for any reason, making the practice widely available. More than a decade later, Arizona created a program that automatically sends voters a ballot for each upcoming election.

The growth of mail ballots since the pandemic has made vote verification and counting a days-long process. Most US news networks took more than a week to call the state for Biden in 2020.

Risk of Early Periods Due To Lifestyle Changes

Early Periods Increase The Risk of Endometriosis

Malayalam Film Actor Minu Muneer Accuses 4 Co-Stars Of Sexual Harassment

Malayalam film actor Minu Muneer on Monday accused prominent stars M Mukesh and Jayasurya of sexual harassment even as the south film industry reels from the Justice K Hema Committee's shocking findings of harassment and abuse of women in the industry.

The allegations come a day after director Ranjith and actor Siddique resigned from their posts in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) after similar accusations were made against them.

In a post on Facebook, the actor claimed that four actors -- Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Idavela Babu and Jayasurya -- had physically and verbally abused her on the sets of a 2013 movie.

Speaking to NDTV, the actor shared her harrowing ordeal. "I had a bitter experience while shooting for a film. I had gone to the toilet and when I came out, Jayasurya hugged me from behind and kissed me without my consent. I was shocked and I ran out," she said, adding that the actor offered her more work if she was willing to be with him.

In another incident, the actor had approached Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) secretary Idavela Babu for a membership application. She said he called her over to his flat on the pretense of applying for a membership of the film association and physically abused her.

Ms Muneer also said actor Mukesh, a MLA of the ruling CPI(M), has denied her the membership after she turned down his advances.

"There is a lot of exploitation in the Malayalam film industry. I am a witness and victim. When I moved to Chennai, nobody reached out to me, asking me what had happened?" she told NDTV.

"In 2013, I was subjected to physical and verbal abuse by these individuals while working on a project. I tried to cooperate and continue working, but the abuse became unbearable. As a result, I was forced to leave the Malayalam film industry and relocate to Chennai. I had spoken out against the abuse in a newspaper article. I am now seeking justice and accountability for the trauma and suffering I endured. I request your assistance in taking action against them for their heinous actions," she wrote in the post, adding that she was accused of not making "adjustments" when she spoke up about the abuse.

Actor Maniyanpilla Raju, who is one of the actors accused by Ms Muneer, has called for an investigation into the allegations, claiming multiple vested interests are behind the accusations. "Some people will try to capitalise on the situation. Among those accused, there will be both innocent and guilty parties. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation is necessary," he said.

Amid mounting pressure, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a high-level meeting with senior police officials on Sunday and has announced the establishment of a seven-member special team to investigate the atrocities faced by women actors.

Speaking to NDTV, actor Soniya Malhar said the victims have repeatedly shared their ordeal with the investigating agencies. "We need action immediately from Centre and the state government. I think it is very difficult to explain what happened over and over again. New committees are being formed every day," she said.

The report by the Justice Hema Committee, constituted by the Kerala government post the 2017 actress assault case, has revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry, prompting calls for action against the guilty.

Eye On Election, Uddhav Thackeray, Allies' Seat-Share Talks Moves To Phase 2

Seat-sharing - the stumbling block of many a political alliance - is in focus before the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election, with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi expected to hold a second round of talks this week, to continue dividing the state's 288 seats ahead of voting expected in October.

The first round was on Saturday in which a deal for Mumbai's 36 seats was "99 per cent finalised", the Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut said, though also stating details will be shared after a 'full agreement' is reached. He stressed, however, "We want Mumbai in the hands of Marathi-speaking people."

Mr Raut's assertions aside, sources told NDTV there is still friction over the division of Mumbai's 36 seats; it appears ex-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's Sena wants 16-20 seats and the Congress at least 15. The third MVA member - Sharad Pawar's NCP - is believed to want seven to eight seats.

The reported minimum ask from each party puts them two seats over that available.

Mumbai is widely seen as the Sena's bastion; in the 2019 Assembly election party (then undivided and allied with the BJP) won 14 seats and together the two swept the city, winning 30 of 36 seats.

The Congress picked up four and one, respectively. Zeeshan Siddique, Aslam Sheikh, Amin Patel, and Varsha Gaikwad were winners for the Congress and Nawab Malik claimed the NCP's sole win.

Normally it shouldn't be too much of a strain for the Sena to have its way on this issue.

However, the Congress' showing in the April-June Lok Sabha election (Ms Gaikwad won the Mumbai North Central seat), gives the national party room to push for a greater share of seats.

READ | At Thackeray-Congress Meet, Talks On Seat Sharing, Candidates

Sources told NDTV talks over seat-sharing, for Mumbai and the rest of the state, will include discussions on 'winnability', i.e., including establishing the political and demographic intricacies of each seat and which of the three parties' candidates has the best chance of winning.

Who Will Be MVA's Chief Minister Face?

Meanwhile, there are also disagreements within the Maha Vikas Aghadi over the alliance's chief ministerial candidate. Specifically, the Congress and NCP are reluctant to make such a declaration at this stage, while the Sena is pushing for a consensus figure.

One option will almost certainly be Uddhav Thackeray - whose first term was cut short by the Sena-NCP rebellion - but the former Chief Minister has also said he will back any candidate, announced by the Congress and NCP (SP), as the MVA's candidate for the top job.

READ | Will Back Any MVA Candidate For Chief Minister: Uddhav Thackeray

"I don't have the feeling I am fighting for myself but for the rights of Maharashtra," he said in Mumbai. He insisted then it would be prudent for the MVA to decide an alliance leader before the election rather than do so after the result - which has been the Congress' strategy in recent polls.

Mr Thackeray's apparent insistence on the MVA identifying a chief ministerial candidate, a figure around whom they can build a campaign, comes amid attacks by the BJP - who will likely rely on the tried-and-tested charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to win another election - on this issue.

Mr Thackeray will likely also remember the fallout of the 2019 Assembly election.

The Sena and BJP won comfortably but the two split after failing to agree a post-poll chief ministerial nominee, which even included talk of rotating the post between the two parties. Miffed at being denied the top job, either solo or shared, Mr Thackeray broke from the BJP and joined the Congress and NCP.

BJP On The Attack

The early friction in MVA seat-sharing talks has prompted jibes from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, with the BJP's Mumbai unit boss, Ashish Shelar predicting its break-up from the strain.

"Most likely, MVA will break over seat sharing. And if, somehow they sustain through seat sharing, it will break afterwards as three parties are there for the Chief Minister's post," he said Sunday.

Meanwhile, the BJP's alliance isn't free of seat-sharing squabbles either, with the Sena group led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction of his deputy, Ajit Pawar, pushing for more.

The BJP's poor showing in the Lok Sabha election - in which it won only nine of 28 seats contested - has given the Shinde Sena, in particular, more bargaining power. The Shinde Sena won seven of 15 seats contested, giving it a significantly greater strike-rate. Ajit Pawar's NCP won one of four.

Dates for the Maharashtra Assembly election have yet to be announced. The 2019 election was held on October 21, with the Sena-BJP combine winning 161 seats to the Congress-led UPA's 98.

In July the BJP's alliance bounced back from the poor Lok Sabha showing by registering a big win in MLC polls. The BJP fielded five candidates, including Pankaja Munde, the daughter of late senior leader Gopinath Munde. All five won. Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP named two each and all four won.

"Patriarchy": Trinamool On Mamata Banerjee Exit Demands Over Rape-Murder

Under fire over the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Trinamool Congress today questioned demands for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. The ruling party in West Bengal said no demands for the Chief Minister's exit are made when such incidents take place in other states and claimed that calls for Ms Banerjee's resignation are an expression of patriarchy.

"There have been so many incidents in so many places. Why the demand for the resignation of the only woman Chief Minister of the country, who won three successive elections? No demands for the resignation of any male Chief Minister for incidents in others places. That is how patriarchy is," Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya told the media this morning.

The Trinamool also hit out at Nabanna Abhijan, a protest march announced by students' organisation to demand justice for the 31-year-old doctor killed in the chilling August 9 incident. The march to the state secretariat, due tomorrow, is an attempt to create chaos in the name of students' protest, Ms Bhattacharya said.

"There is a BJP-ABVP plot to create disturbance. There is a plot to open fire by criminals in police uniform. Tomorrow there are exams. Can students do this? They are doing vulture politics," she said.

"No permission has been sought from police for such a protest. Protests can take place but they have to take permission and they must be held peacefully at designated places," she said.

The remarks come at a time when Kolkata and neighbouring areas are witnessing massive protests over the RG Kar incident, with different sections of the society hitting the streets daily. In the aftermath of the incident, the Opposition has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Banerjee, who also holds the portfolios of Home and Health. Ms Banerjee has hit back at the Opposition, accusing the BJP and Left of plotting unrest in the state, and led a rally demanding justice for the rape-murder victim.

Stressing that everyone in Trinamool wants punishment for the guilty in the doctor's rape and murder case, Ms Bhattacharya questioned why the CBI is yet to make a major breakthrough in the case after taking over the investigation. "The CBI has not been able to throw any light on the case so far. Kolkata Police arrested the accused but the CBI has not filed a chargesheet yet. All rallies demanding justice should culminate at the CGO complex (where CBI office in Kolkata is located) because the state government is not in charge of the probe anymore."

Trinamool Releases "Need Bodies" Videos

At the press meet this morning, Trinamool Congress released two videos. NDTV has not verified their authenticity. In the videos, several men are heard saying, "we need bodies". Trinamool leader Jayprakash Majumdar alleged that the BJP plans to create unrest during the rally to Nabanna tomorrow. "The BJP leadership has been told that unless a Nandigram-type incident happens and there are dead bodies, the tide will not turn in BJP's favour," he said. The Trinamool leader was referring to the 2007 Nandigram violence under the previous Left government in Bengal which claimed 14 lives. Mr Majumdar alleged that there was a conspiracy to fire at protesters at the rally tomorrow.

Earlier, Leader of the Opposition in Bengal Assembly. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, said police was spreading rumours to disrupt the protest.

"Mamata Police is deploying a sinister 'toolkit' to redirect protesters away from marching towards Nabanna, where they seek justice for the RG Kar PGT woman doctor. The West Bengal Government is clearly shaken by the viral call for the 'Nabanna Abhijan' on August 27," he said in a post on X.

Lenovo Worker Fired For Urinating In Hotel Lobby, Sues For $1.5 Million

A Lenovo computer salesman has found himself in a swirl of trouble, fired from his job after he says a bladder condition forced him to relieve himself in a lobby of his Times Square hotel.

Richard Becker, 66, is seeking at least $1.5 million from the American subsidiary of the Chinese computer giant after being dismissed for the wrongful wee, according to a lawsuit filed Friday in New York State Supreme Court and seen by AFP.

He accused the company of "discrimination on the basis of disability in violation of New York State and New York City human rights laws."

According to the suit, Becker was returning to his hotel near New York's Times Square after a work dinner in February when he found himself "overwhelmed" and forced to answer nature's call in a vestibule located on a separate floor from the main lobby.

"A coworker noticed Becker urinating, and -- out of apparent spite and malice -- promptly reported him to HR, even though Becker's conduct caused no harm to anyone whatsoever," the lawsuit said.

Becker said he has been dealing with a chronic bladder condition since 2016 and is under the treatment of a urologist. The court filing said Lenovo colleagues and managers were aware of his condition.

"No sympathy, let alone compliance with the law, would be forthcoming from Lenovo. Instead, within days, Becker was terminated by his employer, following a sham HR 'investigation' in which he was not even interviewed," the lawsuit said.

The Long Island man has been unemployed since.

Lenovo did not immediately respond to an after-hours request for comment.

Iron Dome For Home: Anand Mahindra Finds Solution To Mumbai's Dengue Crisis

As dengue cases continue to surge across Mumbai, industrialist Anand Mahindra has proposed a unique solution to tackle the menace. On Saturday, the Mahindra Chairperson took to X to share a video of a compact laser-powered cannon that detects and kills mosquitoes.

"With dengue on the rise in Mumbai, I'm trying to figure out how to acquire this miniature cannon, invented by a Chinese man, which can seek out & destroy mosquitoes!" the businessman wrote on X.

The device, created by a Chinese engineer, works like a small-scale anti-missile defence system adapted to target mosquitoes, equipped with a radar system to detect them and a laser pointer to destroy them.

He created it by modifying the radar of an electric car to detect insects. What's more, the engineer has kept a detailed record of all the mosquitoes killed by the device in the form of a 'Death note'.

"An iron dome for your home," Anand Mahindra labelled the device.

The Iron Dome is a mobile air defence system developed by Israel to intercept and destroy short-range rockets, artillery shells, and mortar bombs fired from distances of 4 to 70 km. It was designed to protect populated areas from such attacks by intercepting and neutralising the incoming threats before they can cause damage.

"You just gave me a billionaire business idea," a user commented under Mr Mahindra's post.

Another user stated, "Indian mosquitoes are clever enough to dodge these lasers!"

"Is there really such a cannon?" a comment read.

Someone said, "China and its innovations are far ahead of the rest of the world."

Mumbai is currently grappling with a surge in mosquito-borne diseases, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reporting a sharp increase in cases of dengue, chikungunya, and leptospirosis in the first two weeks of August alone.

Choose Leader Who Values 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam': Hindu Priest To Democrats

On the third day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the chants of "Om Shanti, Shanti" echoed in the hall and the priest conducting the prayers urged Americans to choose a leader who believes in the concept of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'.

In an example of inclusivity in the US and growing influence of the Indian community there, a senior Hindu priest from the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Maryland, Rakesh Bhatt conducted Vedic prayers today, seeking blessings for unity across the nation.

At the Convention, Rakesh Bhatt remarked, "Even if we have differences, when it comes to the nation, we have to be united."

"Let our minds think together. Let our hearts beat as one. All for the betterment of society. May this make us powerful so we can unite and make our nation proud," he added.

Mr Bhatt also urged America to choose a leader who believes in the Vedic concept of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the whole world is one family).'

He further mentioned, "We are one universal family. Truth is our foundation and always prevails. Lead us from unreal to real, from darkness to the light, and from death to immortality. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti."

Replying to the prayer conducted by Bhatt, Ajay Bhutoria, Deputy National Finance Chair of the Democratic Party stated, "Rakesh Bhatt's Hindu prayer at the DNC today is a significant moment, showcasing the Democratic Party's commitment to inclusivity and diversity."

"It is heartening to see the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the Indian American community being honoured on such a prominent stage. This moment reflects the growing influence and recognition of our community within the fabric of American society," he added.

Mr Bhatt is a Madhwa priest from Bengaluru who has trained in Rig Veda and Tantrasaara (Maadhva) Agama, under his guru, Pejavar Swamiji of Udupi Ashta Matha, Karnataka.

He received his English and Kannada degrees from Osteen College, Bengaluru, and his Sanskrit degree from Jayachamarajendra College.

To acquire Vedic knowledge he later joined Udupi Ashta Matha and worked at the Badrinath and Raghavendra Swami Koil, Salem, before joining Sri Sri Vishnu Temple in July 2013.

Also, the Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz accepted his party's nomination for vice president at the Democratic National Convention and expressed gratitude.

Vinesh, Charged Rs 25 Lakh For Endorsements Before Olympics, Now Demands...

Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat couldn't be rewarded with a medal despite her progression to the final of the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Vinesh's disqualification from the vent, owing to a failed weigh-in by just 100 grams, left the entire India heartbroken. Hopes of being honoured with a silver medal did arise after Vinesh challenged the decision at the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), but that verdict also went against her. Though the Paris Games produced quite a dramatic and bitter turn in her career, Vinesh is still seen as a winner back home.

Though Vinesh didn't officially get a medal to her and tally in the Paris Games, her performance in the quadrennial event has seen her demand, as a brand ambassador, soar in the market. As per a report in the Economic Times, Vinesh's fee for an endorsement deal has taken a significant jump in comparison to the money she would charge for advertisements before the Paris Games, all thanks to her increased brand value.

Vinesh, who reportedly charged around INR 25 lakh for each endorsement deal before the 2024 Olympics, now asks for a fee in the region of INR 75 lakh and 1 crore from a single brand.

Neeraj Chopra, Manu Bhaker Bask In Olympics Glory

While Manu Bhaker bagged two bronze medals from the Paris Games, Neeraj was the only athlete to return home with a silver. Though Chopra failed to repeat his gold medal show in the Paris Games, his brand value has still soared by 30-40%, going up to USD 40 million or INR 330 crore.

Manu's brand value has also surged, seeing her bag a stunning INR 1.5 crore deal with ThumbsUp. Before the Paris Games, Manu would charge around INR 25 lakh per deal for a single endorsement. The figure has witnessed a jump by 6 times, courtesy of her Olympics show.

Vinesh vs Cousin Babita In Haryana Polls? Buzz Olympian May Join Politics

Ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat is likely to contest the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, sources close to her told IANS on Tuesday. However, Vinesh had stated earlier that she will not move into active politics. But as per the latest report, some political parties are trying hard to "convince" her. Vinesh missed the opportunity to win a gold medal in women's freestyle 50kg category in the Paris Olympics after getting disqualified from the final for being 100gm overweight.

Vinesh received a rousing welcome in the National Capital and her village Balali, Sonipat on Saturday. She was garlanded by Congress Member of Parliament, Deepender Hooda and other members of his family at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. However, which party Vinesh is going to join is yet to be confirmed.

"Yes, why not? It's likely that in Haryana assembly you see Vinesh Phogat vs Babita Phogat and Bajrang Punia vs Yogeshwar Dutt. Some politicial parties are trying to convince her," sources close to Phogat family told IANS when asked about 2024 Olympic finalist wrestler's future plans.

As Vinesh exited the airport, she was met with loud cheers from her fans, family, and friends, who had gathered in large numbers despite the early hours. The overwhelming support and affection brought the wrestling icon to tears.

Outside the airport, emotions ran high as people celebrated. Among the first to welcome Vinesh home were Sakshi Malikkh, who retired from wrestling last year, and Bajrang Punia.

In a poignant moment, Vinesh and Sakshi, both of whom have faced significant challenges in their careers, embraced and broke down in tears, sharing the weight of their struggles.

"Our fight has not ended and the fight will continue and I pray to god that the truth will prevail," Vinesh had said on Saturday.

On Friday, Vinesh expressed her deep sorrow over missing out on the Olympic podium, linking her personal disappointment to the broader struggle for women's rights in India, a cause she championed in her protests against the former wrestling federation chief.

In a three-page letter posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday night, Vinesh hinted at a possible return to the sport, leaving the door slightly open despite her earlier decision to retire after the Paris Olympics disqualification.

Despite the team's efforts, Vinesh was unable to make weight in time for the weigh-in, leading to her disqualification from the gold medal match. Her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a joint silver medal was later dismissed on Wednesday.

Indian Woman Explains Why She Chose US Over Bengaluru:

Vinesh Reveals Gift From Brother On Raksha Bandhan: "Whole Life's Earning"

Vinesh Phogat, since her return to India from Paris Olympics 2024, has been showered with love from all quarters. After an Olympic heart-break for getting disqualified from the women's 50kg wrestling final, Vinesh returned to India on Saturday. She received a rousing welcome at the New Delhi airport. Thousands felicitated her on the way to Babali, where Vinesh' family resides. On MOnday, Vinesh Phogat celebrated Raksha Bandhan.

A special post has gone viral on social media where Vinesh can be seen holding a bundle of Rs 500 notes.

"I am almost 30 years old. Last year he gave me Rs 500. After that this (points to a bundle of currency note). He has earned this much money only in his whole life (jokingly), which he has given to me," Vinesh said. His brother also started started smiling after her statement.

On her way to Balali from Delhi, Vinesh was felicitated by her supporters and 'khap' panchayats in several villages, with the 135km-long journey taking her almost 13 hours on Saturday.

This was after hundreds of supporters gathered outside the IGI airport to give a rousing welcome to Vinesh, who was disqualified for being overweight after reaching the 50kg final at the Olympics.

Her disqualification had created a furore in India and the wrestling world.

Vinesh's appeal against her disqualification was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Vinesh, 29, reached her native village around midnight and was accorded a grand welcome. Her neighbours and friends met her with tears and smiles and patted her for the courage she has shown.

Exhausted after a tiring journey that began in Paris, Vinesh addressed the gathering before calling it a day. The two-time World Championships medallist wished that someone from Balali would better her wrestling achievements.

"It would be disappointing if no wrestler emerged from this village. We have paved the way, given hope with our achievements. I request you all to support the women in this village. They need your support, hope and trust if they have to replace us in future," Vinesh said.

"They can achieve a lot. All they need is your support. I will always be indebted to this nation, this village for giving me so much love and respect.

"Whatever I have learnt in wrestling, I don't know if that is god-gifted or my hard work but whatever I have I would like to share with my sisters from this village and I wish they achieve greater heights than me.

"I can then say with pride that she is from my village and I have trained her. I want that (my) records are broken by wrestlers from this village. Thank you all for staying up so late in the night for me." Vinesh is a two-time CWG gold medallist, Asian Games champion and has won eight Asian Championships medals.

Before arriving in Balali, Vinesh had said that her fight against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) would continue.

"I want to thank all the people who supported us in our struggle. Life itself is a struggle. Our fight has not ended and it will continue," said Vinesh.

Later addressing press in Balali, she reiterated the resolve.

"This Olympic medal is a deep wound. I don't know how much time it would take to heal. I don't know if I would pursue wrestling or not but the kind of courage I got today, I want to use that in the right direction," she added.

"We have been fighting a battle for one year. It will continue and by God's grace, the truth will prevail," she said in a very brief interaction.

Blog: Four Reasons Reading Drives Us Mad - And Why We Still Keep At It

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

To many, reading is a paragon of hobbies. If you take the wide spectrum of leisure activities that humans devote much of their lives to pursue, reading sits snugly in the Goldilocks zone: the sweet spot that defines the perfect avocation. Consider the evidence: an interest in philately, numismatics, or collecting trinkets of any kind really, marks you out as someone who spends their weekends caressing their collection albums and murmuring, 'My precious....'. Opting for a more energetic brand of recreation - like cycling or running, for instance - signals to society that if anyone makes the mistake of approaching you, they will hear about your training regimen in insufferable detail.

Congratulations, You Are A 'Sophisticate' Now

On the other hand, reading - as a hobby - offers a number of benefits. You can win any debate so long as you preface your argument with the words, 'Well, I know that's what you heard on a podcast but I read in a book...'. When your friends are raving about a new movie, you can declare with a sniff, 'To be perfectly honest, the book is much better...'. Surrounding yourself with books can earn you the admiration of your peers. You don't even need to have read them - merely possessing a well-stocked bookcase can make you a sophisticate (ask any interior designer). In these times of snappy reels, clickbait headlines, and dwindling attention spans, book readers are revered as 'Zen masters' who can ignore the lure of doomscrolling and immerse themselves in the textual world.

It is no wonder then that so many parents hope their children grow up to be readers, or that countless adults strive to adopt reading as a hobby. Yet, you rarely hear anyone talking about the undiagnosed emotional damage caused by books - anyone who has read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara will know what I mean - and the pernicious effects of reading in general. It is about time someone acted to remedy this grave oversight.

That Perpetual Despair...

Allowing yourself to be consumed by a love for books can harm you, broadly speaking, in four significant ways. To begin with, it can cause you to be assailed by a sense of despair, a feeling of crushing hopelessness every time you enter a bookshop. As you browse the shelves and stack volumes in the crook of your arm, you realise you will never get around to reading all the books that call out to you. Some are able to make peace with this doleful reality.

Others, those of a more defiant disposition, refuse to be cowed. They redouble their efforts, but since reading capacity is constrained by physical limits, these efforts end up being channelled solely towards the acquisition of books. The Japanese have an elegant word to describe this condition: tsundoku. It means a penchant for stockpiling books with the genuine intention to read them all - subject only to the minor requirement of first attaining immortality. If you are also afflicted with this malady, do not be disheartened. Karl Lagerfeld is said to have owned over 3,00,000 books. At least, things are not as grim for you (I hope).

Guilt Meets Snobbery

This abundance of material naturally leads to the second pitfall of reading: experiencing guilt. No matter which book you pick up, you are sure to feel a twinge of regret for the ones you're compelled to set aside. Every time you pull out your favourite Agatha Christie or P. G. Wodehouse title from the bookshelf, you can hear your dusty copy of War and Peace tutting in disappointment. In the library, when you're lingering in the Young Adult fantasy section - 'young' is relative, after all - you can feel Great Expectations glaring at you from across the aisle. Every breezy read - every literary guilty pleasure - is laced with the shame of having abandoned Far from the Madding Crowd after a dozen pages.

A large part of this contrition is attributable to the third ill effect of reading: snobbery.

The Struggle To 'Belong'

The world of bibliophiles can be alarmingly tribal and each clique has its idiosyncrasies. You have the acolytes of the Russian masters - a bleak lot who can be disqualified from their clan if they ever crack a smile. Crime fiction aficionados tend to sidle up to you, introduce themselves, and then lean in to whisper, "So... what do you think is the best way to get rid of a body?" The devotees of speculative fiction can be identified by their pallid skin, thick glasses, and ability to talk for hours about the genealogy of dragons; and then there are the readers of business management books, who pride themselves on having no imagination.

Every group believes their reading habits to be loftier and they are all perpetually at odds with each other. Indeed, there is only one thing that unites them: a shared loathing for lovers of romance novels, and, let's be honest, you can see where they're coming from.

If you do not throw in your lot with any one of these clubs, then you must forever contend with their tidal pulls as you chart your literary journey. As you flit from one genre to the next, you will be welcomed and then mocked, your choice of books forever questioned and dismissed as being inferior to a host of other suggestions. If you somehow muster the will to ignore these challenges and keep going, then you will eventually have to tackle the fourth, and most fatal, misfortune to befall a reader. You will begin to believe that you, too, can be a writer.

'Can I .... Be A Writer?'

Anyone who spends a substantial amount of time reading books soon begins to harbour fantasies of writing one themselves. It is one of those immutable laws of nature (those who read poetry are - unfortunately for the rest of us - especially susceptible to this affliction). This is one of life's greatest tragedies because writing is a masochistic, time-consuming and exhausting pursuit. When you choose to become a writer, the only people who suffer more than you are your friends and family members who have to read your early output. It is only because they pretend to enjoy it that you are encouraged to continue. Pick up any celebrated guide on the craft of writing - be it Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott or On Writing by Stephen King - and it will tell you that as a writer you must persevere; you must write with dedication and doggedness, and perhaps one day you will be wildly successful and publish a manuscript that makes a tenth of the sales of the latest book by a social media celebrity.

Most bookworms endure one or more of these ordeals, and yet, astonishingly, they continue to read. Books continue to exist, and some people still find the greatest joy in getting lost in their pages, in weaving stories of their own. Most bookworms endure one or more of these ordeals, and yet, astonishingly, they continue to read. Russian Spies Were Stealing US Tech During Cold War. Then FBI Did This

It was the early 1980s, and the Soviet Union had already invaded Afghanistan. The Cold War was at its peak. The Soviet Union and the United States worked on secret missions and operations to undermine each other. According to the CIA, spies working for Moscow had illegally acquired Western technology worth hundreds of millions of dollars in the late 1970s.

But little did the leader of the Communist bloc know that the same process of acquisition of US technology would result in the delivery of sabotaged US high-tech. How did that happen, you ask? Let's find out.

An FBI agent, who once saw an Austrian entrepreneur entering San Francisco's Soviet Consulate, had another chance encounter with the same man, this time at a bar. The agent, Rick Smith, and the man, whose name remains a mystery, would plant what remains a major counterintelligence campaign of the era, according to a report in Politico Magazine.

The Austrian man was already actively exporting American goods to European nations. The FBI believed the Soviet Union was always desperately looking for the latest and cutting-edge American technology. And that's how they dealt a major blow to their Communist opponents.

As part of Operation Intering, the FBI and the Austrian "would seed faulty tech to Moscow and its allies", draining the Soviet Bloc's coffers. And it wasn't limited to just that. The operation would also expose Moscow's intelligence officers and people who conspired against America.

It was all executed from the Austrian capital Vienna, believed to be a neutral ground for both Communist and Western officials to operate from. The Austrian sought and got an appointment with the Soviet Embassy where he was to pitch Moscow cutting-edge Silicon Valley microelectronics and computer technology.

Initially, Moscow spies expressed some interest, "but they wanted classified information, basically," Smith said. However, the Communists directed the Austrian man to their allies -- the Bulgarians, and their East German and Russian allies, who were to get that forbidden tech. But not before the FBI tampered with it.

While some tech was altered before Bulgarians received it, some were left completely unusable. However, to ensure the operation's longevity and avoid suspicion, some of the technology was delivered unadulterated.

The FBI would also tamper with the electronics, which then experienced "chance" voltage overloads once plugged in by the Soviets. Apart from that some of the machines and parts were fiddled with such that they would degrade over time.

The Soviet Bloc unknowingly purchased sabotaged US goods to the tune of millions of dollars. The Communist spies, who had no idea they were being played, were lauded for their "success in purchasing this forbidden technology from the West".

However, it was only a matter of time before the Austrian's cover was blown, and then the Americans couldn't risk using him as an agent anymore.  “He did all this for the sheer fun of doing it,” said Bill Kinane, a retired longtime San Francisco-based FBI counterintelligence agent who helped supervise the Intering operation. “And, like most Austrians, he hated the Russians.”

After the Cold War, the Austrian reportedly moved back to Europe and amassed a huge fortune there in real estate.
