Iran Insider Executed On Spying Charges Paid $2.4 Million By MI6: Report

A former top Iranian defence official, who was executed in January this year, was a British spy, intelligence officials have said. Alireza Akbari, Iran's former deputy defence minister, gave the country's strategic information, including nuclear secrets, to the British for 15 years, the New York Times reported citing intelligence officials. Iran charged Mr Akbari with being an agent of the MI6, but the British government has never acknowledged he was a spy. Britain had called Akbari's hanging a barbaric act and said it would not go unpunished.

The NYT report said that a British intelligence official went to Israel in 2008 and told the officials there that they had a mole with access to Iran's nuclear secret.

The British official even provided information to Israel that suggested Iran was clandestinely building nuclear weapons. A year later, then US President Barack Obama made the information public, sending shockwaves across the world.

Over the years, Mr Akbari also disclosed the identity and activities of more than 100 Iranian officials, the NYT report further said.

Among them was Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the nuclear scientist known as the "father of the Iranian bomb", who was be assassinated by Israel in 2020.

The outlet did not name the intelligence official who is the source of this information. But the report is based on interviews with current and former intelligence officials from the US, UK, Israel, Germany and Iran.

Akbari, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war that raged from 1980-1988, was arrested sometime between March 2019 and March 2020, state media said. After Akbari's arrest, the state television aired eight short videos in which he detailed his spying activities and recruitment by Britain at a function in British embassy in Tehran.

In one of the videos, Akbari said he was recruited by MI6 in 2004 and told that he and his family will be given visas for Britain. A year later, he travelled to the UK and met his handler, who paid him $2.4 million (according to current rate) to set up front companies in Austria, Spain and Britain to provide cover for meetings with his handlers.

Apart from holding the post of Iran's deputy defence minister, Akbari had also been an "advisor to the commander of the navy" as well as "heading a division at the defence ministry's research centre".

सस्ता हुआ कमर्शियल LPG सिलेंडर, अब घटकर इतनी हो गई कीमत

देश में बढ़ती महंगाई के बीच लोगों के लिए एक राहत भरी खबर आई है. दरअसल 1 मई 2023 यानी आज से कमर्शियल एलपीजी सिलेंडर (LPG Price) के दाम में भारी कटौती की गई है. नतीजतन अब शहरों में गैस सिलेंडर के दाम बदल गए हैं. तेल विपणन कंपनियों ने कमर्शियल LPG  गैस सिलेंडरों की कीमतों में 171.50 रुपए की कटौती की है. दिल्ली में आज से 19 किलो कमर्शियल LPG सिलेंडर का खुदरा बिक्री मूल्य 1856.50 रुपए हो गई है.

हालांकि, 14.2 किलो वाले घरेलू रसोई गैस (Cooking Gas) की कीमतों में फिलहाल कोई बदलाव नहीं हुआ है.  घरेलू एलपीजी सिलेंडर की बात करें तो वह अपने पुराने रेट्स पर मिल रहे हैं. कोलकाता में अब कमर्शियल सिलेंडर के दाम 1960.50, मुंबई में 1808.50 जबकि चेन्नई में 2021.50 रूपए हो गए हैं.

Another drama-filled Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match concluded in the last over, with Punjab Kings securing a thrilling victory over Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. The match, went down the wire, with PBKS needing 3 runs off the final ball to win the match. But, the Shikhar Dhawan-led franchise could've sealed the win a little earlier if Jitnes Sharma wasn't dismissed in a debatable manner by Tushar Deshpande on the 4th delivery of the 19th over. Caught while trying to hit a six, there was probably millimetres of distance between the fielder's foot and the boundary rope.

With Punjab needing 11 runs from 8 balls, Jitesh hit the ball towards to long-on boundary. Substitute Fieler Shaik Raseed caught the ball but his foot seemed to have touched the padding on the boundary rope.

After a lengthy review, the decision went in the favour of the fielding side, with the third umpire suggesting that he didn't see the cushion move. As OUT flashed on the big screen, fans went berserk as many had probably thought that the decision was going against them.

Dhoni had a cheeky smile on his face when Raseed took the catch, probably thinking how difficult the decision is going to be for the third umpire to make. However, he and head coach Stephen Fleming were pretty please to see the call going in their favour.

Nevertheless, the catch didn't really help CSK turn the game in their favour as PBKS chased down the target of 201 runs, with Sikandar Raza hitting three runs on the final delivery of the match.

At the end of the game, CSK Skipper Dhoni put the blame both on the batting and the bowling unit for the defeat.

"We need to be prepared as to what is to be done. The last few overs when we were batting, we could have gotten 10-15 more. Our bowling needed some cushion. The slower one did grip. Our batters have been putting runs consistently. I think 200 was par but we bowled two bad overs. We know the conditions well. We didn't bowl well. You didn't want to get hit to that side. You need to see what is the problem. The execution or the plan. Pathirana bowled really well. The first six overs we can do better. What lines to bowl," he said.

CSK are placed 4th in the IPL 2023 points table after the result.
