NDTV Ground Report: "Won't Give Up...", Bangkok Officials Vow To Save Lives

Bangkok authorities may have located one of the 76 people trapped under tons of steel and concrete after a 33-floor building collapsed due to tremors caused by the Myanmar earthquake last week. City officials told NDTV it is unclear if the person is alive, or even if it is a human being and not debris.

The 72-hour window - that critical period of time immediately after a disaster, in which there is the greatest chance of saving lives - expired this morning, but the focus is still on locating survivors and not their bodies. And officials have insisted they will continue to do so for a month.

"We are speeding up the rescue operation... we are still hopeful of finding people and will continue to search for a month," Bangkok Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej told NDTV.

Rushing to and from the collapse site, a bottle of water in her hand, Ms Kamolvej could spare only seconds to talk, such is the intensity with which officials are responding to this disaster.

"We are not going to give up," she said with determination, explaining the '72-hour window' is only a "medical principle" that indicates the highest chances for survival. "But it doesn't mean that after 72 hours there is no survivor... I will stay here for weeks or a month..." she said.

The under-construction 33-floor building belonged to the Thai government.

Around her emergency services personnel run helter-skelter trying to help, each in any way they can. Police vehicles, ambulances, fire engines, and heavy machinery can all be seen.

Meanwhile, another official confirmed to NDTV that international agencies, and United States special forces teams, are already on-ground and helping local relief and rescue efforts.

"Less Than One Per Cent Chance"

The outlook, though, is grim.

City police officials told NDTV Sunday "most of the people are probably dead".

NDTV Exclusive | "Most Victims Probably Dead": Bangkok Police On Collapse

There is a "less than one per cent chance" of finding survivors.

But for Ms Kamolvej and the rescuers, that one per cent is good enough to try.

Bangkok Building Collapse Rescue Efforts

Rescuers have had to factor in weather conditions; it rained overnight in the Thailand capital, and it was overcast Monday morning with more rain predicted all this week.

Robots to create 3D maps of the debris, machinery to move it, and sniffer dogs and thermal imaging drones to locate survivors or, as is increasingly likely, their bodies have been deployed.

The building - terrifying videos of it imploding as the tremors hit began circulating on X minutes after its collapse - is in Bangkok's Chatu Chak market, which is popular with tourists.

When completed - it had been under construction for three years at a reported cost of $59 billion - it was to belong to the Thailand government's State Audit Office.

Bangkok, Myanmar Death Count

The numbers are still uncertain, but a majority of the 18 earthquake-related deaths reported across Bangkok are workers who were caught in its collapse. One of the lucky few who made it out alive was Kyaw Lin Htet, a labourer from Myanmar who told AFP it felt like he "lost consciousness".

Over in the neighbouring country, which took the brunt of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake and where over 1,700 people have died so far, there are similar scenes in Mandalay and other cities.

But, unlike Bangkok, here rescue efforts are winding down, with any hope of finding more survivors fading almost by the second even as locals dig through rubble with their hands.

In one, of all-too-few miraculous incidents, a woman was pulled out alive.

Rescue efforts here have been complicated by searing temperatures - expected to cross 40 degrees Celsius today - that will exhaust rescue workers and accelerate body decomposition.

The desperation in Myanmar is, perhaps, best understood by the harrowing story of another woman - who was pregnant - and was located after 55 hours under a collapsed building in Mandalay.

Rescuers exulted at having found her alive. They were forced to amputate her leg but managed to pull her clear. But, after pulling her out, she died from blood loss due to the amputation.

Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, issued a rare international plea for aid hours after the earthquake struck, a stark departure from the regime's usual stance of rejecting foreign assistance. He has also declared a state of emergency in six regions, and hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties.

Thousands have been injured and over 300 people remain missing.

"We're Only Dependent On God": Rape Survivor's Father On Asaram Bail

With Asaram, who is serving life imprisonment in a rape case, getting fresh interim bail, the survivor's father has said his family now faces increased danger as the self-proclaimed godman "can do anything" to them any time.

The man, a resident of the Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, expressed surprise over Asaram being granted bail multiple times and claimed that "he is managing everyone".

The victim was raped at Asaram's Jodhpur ashram when she was a minor (16) in 2013.

The Gujarat High Court on Friday granted fresh temporary bail for three months to Asaram on medical grounds.

Senior advocate Shalin Mehta, representing Asaram, argued that the 86-year-old was suffering from heart and kidney ailments, and the only treatment available to him was ayurvedic 'panchakarma'.

The treatment at a Jodhpur-based ayurvedic facility had only just begun and would take another three months, the lawyer told the court.

"When Asaram was in jail, it was our victory. Now he is managing everyone. I am surprised that the court is repeatedly granting interim bail to Asaram, first for seven days, then 12 days, then two and a half months and now for three months," the survivor's father told PTI.

On January 7, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Asaram till March 31 in this case registered by Gujarat Police.

As the three-month period was coming to an end on Monday, his lawyers moved the high court seeking bail for another three months, starting April 1.

The survivor's father claimed the family had been cheated by their lawyer who did not file an objection to Asaram's bail plea despite getting all the papers ready.

"Even after repeated requests, our lawyer did not file an objection in court. As a result of this, the court again granted him bail for three months.

"We signed all the papers and gave them to the lawyer but he did not file the objection and kept making us run around... he has cheated us," the survivor's father alleged.

He further claimed that ever since Asaram came out of jail, his supporters had been saying that he would not go back. Now, their words are proving to be true, he said.

He said the self-proclaimed godman has been travelling from Jodhpur to Indore, Ujjain and Surat, and meeting his followers.

"What kind of illness does he have? Now the danger to our family has increased. He can do anything to us at any time. Now we are only dependent on God," he said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi said a guard has been deployed at the rape survivor's house and two gunmen have also been given to her.

Apart from this, a CCTV camera, covering the survivor's entire house, has been installed in front of her residence. The local Kotwali police have been instructed to monitor her house while patrolling at night, the SP said.

"Our officers are constantly monitoring the security of the survivor's family," he added.

Asaram was convicted in the rape case in 2018 and sentenced to life imprisonment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In 2023, he was convicted by a Gujarat court for raping a woman disciple at his ashram in the Motera area of Ahmedabad.

#RIPSridev...आपकी कमी खलेगी.”

बता दें कि  हर साल, वे अपनी बेटियों और परिवार के साथ क्वालिटी टाइम बिताकर अपनी सालगिरह मनाते हैं. हालांकि, श्रीदेवी की मृत्यु के बाद उनकी 37वीं शादी की सालगिरह का जश्न नहीं मनाया.

18 Million Tons Of 'White Gold' Worth $540 Billion Unearthed In The US

A significant lithium discovery beneath California's Salton Sea, the state's largest lake, has the potential to transform the US battery industry and advance clean energy ambitions, according to The Daily Galaxy. Scientists estimate that the lake contains approximately 18 million tons of lithium, a key component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

This discovery is particularly timely as the world transitions to EVs and renewable energy sources. The Salton Sea's lithium reserves could reduce the nation's dependence on foreign lithium imports and support the production of batteries for millions of electric vehicles.

Located in Southern California's Imperial County, the Salton Sea is now considered one of the world's largest lithium brine deposits. A US Department of Energy-funded study revealed the estimated 18 million tons, far exceeding previous estimates. The find presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges related to environmental risks and geopolitical considerations.

Michael McKibben, a geochemistry professor at the University of California, Riverside, and one of the study's authors, emphasised the significance of this discovery:

He told Daily Galaxy, "This is one of the largest lithium brine deposits in the world. This could make the United States completely self-sufficient in lithium and stop importing it through China."

California Governor Gavin Newsom has already dubbed the Salton Sea the "Saudi Arabia of lithium", highlighting its potential to position the U.S. as a global leader in lithium production.

While the discovery is monumental, extracting lithium from the Salton Sea is no simple task. The process involves drilling geothermal production wells thousands of feet below the earth's surface to access lithium-rich brine. Once the lithium is extracted, the brine is pumped back underground.

'Not Ready...": Sehwag Delivers Brutal Verdict On Gill's Captaincy For GT

Former Indian cricket team star Virender Sehwag was not impressed with Shubman Gill's captaincy as Gujarat Titans slumped to a loss against Punjab Kings in IPL 2025 on Tuesday. Gujarat Titans produced a poor bowling display and were ultimately beaten by 11 runs. Sehwag said that Gill was neither ready nor proactive in his approach and that proved to be a major factor. Sehwag specifically pointed out how he used fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and said that he was taken off the attack too early in the powerplay.

“I thought that Shubman Gill's captaincy wasn't up to the mark, he wasn't ready, he wasn't proactive. When Siraj was bowling well, he brought on Arshad Khan, who I think conceded 21 runs in the powerplay and that over changed the momentum," Sehwag said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

“If Siraj is bowling well with the new ball, there is no point holding him back for the death overs and you see he also got hit in the end," Sehwag added.

Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill reflected on his team's narrow 11-run defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their opening game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) in Ahmedabad.

Gill acknowledged that Gujarat had their moments but failed to capitalize on key phases.

"We got our chances when we were bowling and batting. Too many runs we conceded in the back end of the innings...Those three overs in the middle, we scored around 18 runs. That, and our first three overs we didn't score many runs. That cost us the game," he said after the game, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

Despite the loss, Gill found positives in his team's performance.

"Apart from that, many positives for us today. Not easy for someone to come and deliver those yorkers for someone who is on the bench. It's always a good wicket to bat on here," he added.

Rs 1 Lakh Crore Delhi Budget: Focus On Yamuna Cleaning, Women's Welfare

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday presented Rs 1 lakh crore FY26 Budget with 10 focus areas, including electricity, roads, water, and connectivity.

Calling it a "historic Budget," Ms Gupta emphasized that the era of "corruption and inefficiency" was over, and announced that the government had doubled capital expenditure to Rs 28,000 crore.

The Budget outlay for fiscal year 2025-26, marks a 31.5 per cent increase from the previous year.

"This is not an ordinary Budget, this Budget is the first step to develop Delhi which was ruined in the past 10 years. Delhi went down in every aspect of development in the past decade. The previous government ruined the economic health of the national capital like termites," Ms Gupta, who also holds the Finance portfolio said.

A major focus of the Budget is the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna River, inspired by the Sabarmati riverfront project. The government has allocated Rs 500 crore for Yamuna cleaning, ensuring that only treated water enters the river through the decentralization of 40 sewage treatment plants (STPs).

Additionally, Rs 500 crore has been earmarked for the repair and upgradation of STPs, and Rs 250 crore for replacing old sewer lines.

A major focus has also been placed on clean drinking water and sanitation, with Rs 9,000 crore allocated for related projects.

The health sector has been allocated Rs 6,874 crore, with a focus on setting up health and wellness centres and expanding the Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative.

The Delhi government has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for improved transport links within Delhi-NCR.

For women's welfare, Rs 5,100 crore has been earmarked to provide Rs 2,500 per month to eligible women. Additionally, the government will install 50,000 CCTV cameras across the city to enhance women's safety.

Ms Gupta announced that the government aims to make Delhi an investment- and innovation-friendly city. To achieve this, a new industrial policy and a new warehouse policy will be introduced. A Traders' Welfare Board will also be established.

Furthermore, Delhi will host its first-ever Global Investment Summit, which will be held every two years. To support small-scale industries, Rs 50 crore has been earmarked for skill development programs, including bee-keeping.

The government has also allocated Rs 696 crore for the development of slum clusters and Rs 100 crore to set up 100 Atal Canteens across Delhi.

"There is a lot of difference between us and them (AAP). "You (AAP) made 'Sheesh Mahal' for yourself, we will build houses for the poor. You installed pot toilets worth lakhs, we will make toilets for the people in slum areas," she said.

On education, Ms Gupta attacked the previous AAP government, accusing it of misleading people about the quality of education. "The AAP government failed many students in 9th and 11th standard so that their 10th and 12th results appear better," she alleged.

To reform the education system, the government will launch CM SHRI Schools, inspired by PM SHRI Schools and aligned with the New Education Policy. The FY26 Budget has allocated Rs 100 crore for these schools.

Additionally, Delhi government will provide free laptops to 1,200 students passing class 10th and has allocated Rs 750 crore for this.

Ms Gupta also announced a new education hub in the Narela area.

This Budget is the first presented by a BJP-led government in Delhi in over 26 years, following the party's victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in last month's Assembly elections.

Opinion: Israel May Be Planning To Occupy Gaza Indefinitely

The number of people killed in Gaza in the Israel-Hamas war reached a new milestone over the weekend. More than 50,000 people have now died, including 15,613 children, according to figures released by Gaza's health ministry on Sunday.

Nearly 700 Palestinians have lost their lives since last Tuesday, when Israel restarted lethal air strikes in Gaza last week. Both Israel and the US have blamed Hamas for the new offensive, which has ripped into a fragile ceasefire that had largely held since it came into effect in January.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military was asked to take action against the “terrorist” group after its "repeated refusal to release our hostages" as well as its rejection of US proposals. But many question the true intentions of Netanyahu.

The first phase of the ceasefire ended on March 1. In the second phase, Hamas was to release the remaining 59 hostages—35 of them believed to be dead—in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal.

But Israel never started negotiations for the second phase. US envoy Steve Witkoff put forward his new "bridging proposal" that would have extended the expired first phase. He proposed that more hostages would return home in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners. But, crucially, negotiations over a permanent end to the war would be delayed. That was not acceptable to Hamas, and Israel walked out of the ceasefire agreement.

The New Israeli Offensive

Has Netanyahu's government restarted its bombing campaign because of Hamas refusing to free the remaining hostages, or is it due to issues he is facing at home? Is this move an attempt to implement a long-held agenda of the far-right in Israel to occupy Gaza permanently, reestablish Israeli settlements there, or even implement President Trump's plan to expel Palestinians from the territory and make it a “riviera of the Middle East?”

Last Friday, Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, said he had instructed the military to seize additional areas of the Gaza Strip while issuing evacuation orders for Palestinian civilians in those areas to build up pressure on Hamas. “If the Hamas terror organisation continues to refuse to release the hostages, I instructed the IDF to capture additional areas, evacuate the population, and expand the security zone around Gaza for the protection of Israeli communities and IDF soldiers, through a permanent hold of the area by Israel…As long as Hamas continues its refusal, it will lose more and more land that will be added to Israel,” he said in a statement.

If one looks at Katz's statement along with reports in the Israeli media, the Netanyahu government's plan for Gaza appears to emerge. Reports in the Israel media say the military chief, Eyal Zamir, is preparing for a full-scale ground offensive to reinstate military control in Gaza. “It seems that Israel is currently creating a smokescreen around the government and military's true intentions. While waiting for possible updates in negotiations, which are uncertain, preparations are underway for a large-scale operation to occupy Gaza and restore full Israeli control,” writes commentator Amos Hartel in Haaretz newspaper. “This will occur while the far-right factions in the government push for the return of settlements and the forced expulsion of Palestinians, to be presented as ‘voluntary migration', with backing from Donald Trump,” he adds.

Will Israeli Settlements Return?

Of course, Israel's far-right would like the reported plan to be implemented. They have been demanding for months that the Israeli settlements come back to Gaza (Israel had settlements in Gaza until 2005, which were removed after the government decided to pull back).

Until recently, most analysts and commentators in Israel thought resettling Gaza was far-fetched. But not anymore. In October, two senior far-right Cabinet ministers, six lawmakers from Netanyahu's Likud party and several of his party's local leaders from across Israel attended a pro-settlement rally, where demands were raised for creating Israeli settlements in Gaza.

But there is no evidence that a majority of the Israeli public is ready for such a plan, or even for a permanent occupation of Gaza. In any case, it is unlikely to make them more secure. Gazans are also not willing to leave the territory despite their unprecedented hardships since the Hamas-Israel war.
Palestinians can't forget the “Nakba” of 1948, in which, following the founding of the state of Israel, about half of the civilians residing in Palestine were forced to leave their homes and never allowed to return. Many settled in Gaza.

Growing Protests Against The Plan

As part of his plan, Trump has suggested that Arab countries—Egypt and Jordan, in particular—absorb the displaced population, while the United States would “own” the seaside territory. Arabs and even America's allies denounced the plan, which has been condemned as ‘ethnic cleansing' by global human rights groups.

In Israel itself, tens of thousands of people across Israel have been staging protests against Netanyahu since last week. Protesters and his other critics have accused him of undermining democracy and restarting the war simply to divert attention from the political and legal problems he has been facing, thus jeopardising the fate of the remaining hostages.

The immediate trigger for protests was Netanyahu's sacking of Ronen Bar, the head of Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet (though this was later put on hold by a court while judges examined the evidence). The resumption of military action in Gaza fuelled their anger further. Netanyahu has accused Bar of failing to prevent the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of more than 250 other Israelis, which triggered the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

It was the worst attack in Israel's history, sparking outrage not only in the country but across the globe. Ironically though, Netanyahu himself has not taken any responsibility for the horrific terrorist attack, which happened under his watch.

Netanyahu's Troubles

No Israeli prime minister before Netanyahu has ever fired the head of a security agency during a war. His critics argue that the real reason behind the move appears to be investigations launched by Shin Bet against officials close to Netanyahu.

The agency is probing a spokesperson who allegedly leaked to a German news outlet classified documents that appeared to give the prime minister political cover in ceasefire negotiations. Shin Bet is also looking into claims that Qatar reportedly hired close Netanyahu aides to launch a public relations campaign in Israel. Qatar had sent millions of dollars in cash to Gaza, with Netanyahu's approval. The assumption is that this money reached Hamas.

Netanyahu's critics also point to his attempts to sack his Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, who had said that the Israeli PM needed to clarify the legal basis for his decision to remove Bar, adding that “the role of the Shin Bet is not to serve the personal trust of the prime minister”.

On Sunday, the Israeli cabinet voted in favour of a no-confidence motion against Gali Baharav-Miara, in a move designed to hasten her dismissal. In response, she said the government was seeking to place itself above the law and operate without checks and balances.

Protesters are also concerned about judicial reforms that would introduce more political appointees to committees selecting judges. Netanyahu is already undergoing a corruption trial, for which he has been appearing in court. He faces charges related to fraud, bribery and breach of trust, though he alleges that they are politically motivated and fabricated by his opponents.

Trump's Playbook

Taking a leaf out of Trump's book, a defiant Netanyahu says there has been a conspiracy against him by the ‘leftist deep state', just as Trump was being targeted in the United States.  “In America and in Israel, when a strong rightwing leader wins an election, the leftist deep state weaponises the justice system to thwart the people's will. They won't win in either place!” he said in a post on X last week.
But opinion polls show Netanyahu is now deeply unpopular in his country and might lose an election if it takes place now. He thus relies even more on far-right partners for his government to survive now. This could be one reason for his trying to appease them regarding the Gaza policy.

Left In The Lurch

Israel's brutal military response to the October 7 attacks by Hamas has resulted in devastating consequences not only for the militant group but also for Gaza's general population. Most of the leaders of Hamas and its ally, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, have been killed.

Israel's other enemies, like Yemen-based Houthis and its sponsor Iran, are now much weakened. The regime change in Syria has also given a strategic advantage to the country. So, the parties supporting Hamas are either gone or are hardly able to threaten Israel anymore.

With Trump in the White House, Netanyahu could not find a better ally in America. In contrast to his desperate attempts for a ceasefire in Ukraine, Trump doesn't seem keen to put an end to fighting in Gaza. Although he did pressure Netanyahu to agree on a ceasefire deal with Hamas in January, his support for Israel's new offensive suggests that he may still be hoping for his Gaza Riviera plan to succeed, regardless of what this could mean for Gaza's civilians.

Unfortunately, Palestinians in Gaza don't have powerful backers, such as the European governments that have vowed to help another embattled population, the Ukrainians, even if the US abandons them. Even Arab governments, including Saudi Arabia, the host of the Ukraine ceasefire talks and the most powerful Arab nation, have not provided such support to the Palestinians.

Drugs Craving, No Conversations: Meerut Murder Accused's Days In Prison

Muskaan Rastogi and her lover Sahil Shukla, accused of brutally murdering her husband Saurabh Rajput and hiding his body parts in a cement-sealed drum, wanted to stay together in jail but were told this was not possible. Sources in Meerut's Chaudhary Charan Singh district jail have said the two had told the jail authorities that they wanted to stay in the same barrack, but the officers cited the jail manual and said this could not be allowed. The two are in adjoining shared cells.

According to prison sources, Sahil has been experiencing withdrawal symptoms in jail and looked restless. Both Muskaan and Sahil do not speak to other prisoners and no one has come to meet them yet. The two were also counselled in the de-addiction centre at the prison and jail staff have been asked to keep an eye on them. The sources said Muskaan did not eat anything on her first day at the jail, but has been having her meals since then.

The two are currently in judicial custody after their arrest last week. Sources in Meerut police have said they will seek their custody for detailed questioning as part of the investigation.

Muskaan and Sahil were arrested last week for allegedly murdering her husband Saurabh Rajput, a former Merchant Navy officer who had been working in London for the past two years. Saurabh had come home last month to celebrate the birthday and his six-year-old daughter. According to police, Muskaan drugged Saurabh on March 4 and then stabbed him to death. She and Sahil then chopped up his body into 15 pieces and sealed them in a plastic drum with wet cement. The two then left for Himachal Pradesh, where they used Saurabh's phone to post pictures on social media to mislead his friends and family. Later, Muskaan told her parents that she and Sahil had killed Saurabh.

Saurabh and Muskaan had a love marriage in 2016 and have a six-year-old daughter. Muskaan's relationship with Saurabh's family was strained and the couple had moved out to a rented home. Around 2019, Saurabh found out about his wife's affair with Sahil. He had also considered divorce, but stepped back thinking of his daughter's future. He had been working in London, while Muskaan stayed in Meerut. According to Muskaan's parents, she and Sahil killed Saurabh because they feared he would put an end to their drug sessions. Muskaan's parents have said Saurabh always supported her and must get justice. Saurabh's family has alleged Muskaan married him for money and they did not like her from the beginning.

Former US Attorney, Who Quit After Trump Took Office, Found Dead At Home

Jessica Aber, the former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), was found dead at her home on Saturday, officials said.

The body of the 43-year-old lawyer, who resigned after US President Donald Trump took office in January, was discovered at her home in Virginia's Alexandria.

An investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death, the police said in a statement.

"This morning, at approximately 9:18 am, Alexandria Police responded to the 900 block of Beverley Drive for the report of an unresponsive woman. Officers located a deceased woman," the statement said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia will determine the cause and manner of death, it added.

The incumbent US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik S Siebert, said he was "heartbroken beyond words" to learn about Ms Aber's death.

"She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being. We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world. Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard," he said in a statement.

"Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard. Jess was a proud Virginian from high school through college and throughout her career. She loved EDVA and EDVA loved her back.  We remain committed to her life's work, a commitment to seeking justice, as she would have wanted," he added.

Who Was Jessica Aber

Jessica Aber was nominated as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia by then President Joe Biden in August 2021.

She began her service in the EDVA in 2009 as an Assistant US Attorney, prosecuting financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation cases.

Why Elon Musk's Trans Daughter Snubbed X For Rivals Bluesky, Threads

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the 20-year-old estranged daughter of Elon Musk, has made it clear that she wants nothing to do with her father- or his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Instead, she has found a digital home on rival platforms like Meta's Threads and Bluesky.

Why Vivian Wilson Is Not On Elon Musk-Owned X

Vivian Wilson has been highly active on Meta's Threads and Bluesky, a decentralised social media platform that many see as an alternative to Elon Musk's X. Musk acquired Twitter (now X) in 2022 - the same year Wilson legally changed her name, writing in a petition that she no longer wished to be "related to [her] biological father in any way, shape, or form."

In a recent Teen Vogue interview, she also confirmed that she is financially independent from him and has no desire to be associated with him.

Bluesky, originally launched as a side project by Twitter's co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2019, gained traction after Musk's takeover. Many users, frustrated by his approach to content moderation, flocked to the platform. Now with over 28 million users, Bluesky has become a refuge for those seeking a less politically charged social media space.

Vivian Wilson's Relationship With father Elon Musk

Wilson has distanced herself from Musk for years, particularly after coming out as transgender in 2020. Musk has continued to speak about her publicly. In a 2024 interview with manosphere influencer Jordan Peterson, Musk repeatedly deadnamed Wilson and claimed she had been "killed by the woke mind virus." His remarks echoed how she was portrayed in Walter Isaacson's biography of Musk - as an angry, rebellious child with radical political views.

Vivian Wilson responded on Meta's Threads, calling Musk's portrayal of her "entirely fake" and accusing him of being "desperate for attention and validation."

Vivian Wilson, The 'Queen of Threads'

Vivian Wilson calls herself the "Queen of Threads" and frequently posts on Threads, Bluesky, TikTok and Instagram. She even "ratioed" Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Threads, an achievement she described as making her feel like "the f**king queen." "I am the Queen of Threads; that's my branding," she told Teen Vogue. "I have a Bluesky, but 'Queen of Bluesky' doesn't have the same ring to it."

Her Take on Social Media and Politics

While Vivian Wilson acknowledges social media's power in raising awareness, she is also wary of its dangers - particularly the rise of online radicalisation through spaces like 4chan. She pointed to the role social media played in bringing attention to the ongoing war in Gaza, saying, "A lot of people initially found out about that issue from social media." She also asked to verify social media information rather than blindly trusting online sources.

Though she doesn't see herself as a political activist, Wilson feels a strong obligation to speak out on trans rights, particularly in defence of minors receiving gender-affirming care.

Her Thoughts on Right-Wing Social Media Users

Vivian Wilson calls right-wing social media influencers "bad at posting" and lacking charisma. She argues that humour is essential for engaging audiences and that many conservative figures fail to be entertaining. Despite this, she acknowledges that right-wing users dominate social media platforms like X and Meta, though she finds it puzzling given what she sees as their lack of posting talent.

Asked about her own social media skills, Vivian Wilson said, "I don't know if I'm good at social media," she told Teen Vogue. "I make posts. Sometimes people like them, and sometimes they don't. My target audience is me."

She admitted to overcoming anxiety about posting to a large audience but has since adopted a carefree attitude. "If I laugh, then I'll think, 'Oh, maybe some other people will laugh' - and if they don't, I don't give a f**k," she said.

Bio-Farming, Muscle Loss To Be Among Indian Astronaut's Space Experiments

Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who is set to make history as the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) this year, will likely conduct at least three experiments, including research on muscle loss in space.

Minister of State (MoS) for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh said Mr Shukla will focus on "space technology, space bio-manufacturing and bio-astronautics" during the latter's fortnight-long space mission. The IAF officer will grow special micro-organisms in the football-sized space station to look for edible algae; grow special bacteria; and study effect on muscle cells, and understand why astronauts face muscle loss in space.

Medical experts have raised concerns over the health and muscle atrophy of Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently returned to Earth after a nine-month gruelling stay at the ISS.

"Space is an unforgiving environment and just becoming an astronaut does not change the basic human physiology," Dr Singh said.

Continuous availability of nutrients, preservation of food, microgravity, radiation, physiological changes and health hazards in space travellers, potable water and a way to clean and use waste in a sustainable way are some of the key challenges in space, he said. "It has been projected that by 2050, commercial space travel is going to become a reality and we need to be future-ready. To this end, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will jointly take up mission projects, focusing on simple space bio-manufacturing demonstration experiments," he added.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Mr Shukla will pilot the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private astronaut mission launching aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The American space agency is expected to launch the mission from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida possibly as early as May. The crew will conduct experiments, outreach programs and commercial activities in microgravity as part of a collaboration between NASA and ISRO.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The third experiment will focus on the adverse effects of space conditions on the physiology of astronauts. (DBT)

Mr Singh said the micro-gravity environment will offer unique challenges. The Indian experiments, however, will aid the upcoming Gaganyaan and Bhartiya Antariksh Station programs, he said.

Providing details, the MoS said the first experiment will involve using some edible microalgae to grow them in space and see if they are found resilient in space conditions and can serve as a sustainable source of food like protein, carbohydrate, lipids and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E for astronauts during extended space expeditions. These algae will be grown in enclosed containers and will be fed with water and carbon dioxide, adding that this experiment will be spearheaded by the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi.

The second experiment, also led by the ICGEB, will aim for waste-to-wealth creation in space. The urea present in the urine of the astronauts will be used to grow some blue-green algae named spirulina and a desert species called Chroococcidiopsis, the minister says. Resource recycling is critical in space as hauling material is extremely costly.

Mr Singh says the third experiment will be headed by the Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (INSTEM), Bengaluru, and will focus on the adverse effects of space conditions on the physiology of astronauts, and how to mitigate them.

Reports suggest that astronauts experience up to 20% muscle loss in space flights lasting five to 11 days. On the other hand, muscle loss or Sarcopenia takes decades to develop on Earth. By using supplements in a muscle cell culture model, researchers are attempting to increase mitochondrial function, which is an important component in this condition. On Earth, this experiment is expected to help patients face similar muscle loss.

India's bio-economy has experienced remarkable growth - from $10 billion in 2014 to over $151 billion in 2023, with projections to reach $300 billion by 2030.

In a statement, the DBT said the collaboration with ISRO will advance space biotechnology research in India and contribute significantly to the space economy of our country. The space economy is expected to grow five times in the next 10 years, to around $44 billion.

One of the niche areas is space bio-manufacturing, which has immense commercial potential like "artificial organ development" that requires scaffolding on Earth to keep the tissue layers together. When experiments are conducted in space, the tissue layers do not fall apart and scaffolding is not required. DBT and ISRO will also look into organoids development in space, with a future goal of artificial organ development.

It may be noted that three very simple experiments to grow Lobia seed, bacteria and aggregates of spinach cells in space were done on an ISRO module called POEM earlier this year. These were the first biology-related experiments done by Indians in the microgravity of space.

Explained: Inside Donald Trump's Dismantling Of US Education Department

It was 1979 when former US President Jimmy Carter's administration managed a narrow 210-to-206 House victory to create a cabinet-level Department of Education. Forty-six years later another US President, Donald Trump, is close to fulfilling a long-standing conservative ambition: the complete dismantling of the department.

On Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin the process of shutting down the government agency. The order instructs Ms McMahon to "take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities," to the fullest extent permitted by law.

The move, a major shake-up of the American education system, has been a Republican talking point for decades. While closing the department outright would require congressional action, Trump's administration has already begun taking steps to weaken its influence. The department's workforce has been cut in half, its research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences, has been gutted while billionaire Elon Musk-led Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cracked down on several contracts deemed "woke".

"Since 1979, the US Department of Education has spent over $3 trillion with virtually nothing to show for it. Despite per-pupil spending having increased by more than 245 per cent over that period, there has been virtually no measurable improvement in student achievement," the White House said.

The US Education Department distributes billions of dollars in federal funds to schools and universities, overseeing civil rights protections, and managing the federal student loan program. Trump's plan raises questions about the future of these functions.

What Does Trump Want

President Trump and his allies contend that federal oversight - particularly through the Department of Education -has failed students, teachers, and parents. His case for dismantling the department hinges on a familiar conservative argument: that education is best managed at the state and local level.

"Our Nation's bright future relies on empowered families, engaged communities, and excellent educational opportunities for every child," Trump's order read.

Trump wants to cut off government funding to schools and universities that promote what he calls "critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content."

"After 45 years the United States spends more money on education by far than any other country and spends likewise by far more money per pupil than any country and it's not even close but yet we rank near the bottom of the list in terms of success. We are at the bottom of the list and we've been there for a long time. 70 per cent of eighth graders are not proficient in either reading or math. 40 per cent of fourth graders lack even basic reading skills. Our Public elementary and middle schools score worse in reading today than when the department opened by a lot," Trump said.

Trump's "bottom of the list" claim was fact-checked by Nat Malkus, senior fellow and the deputy director of education policy at the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute.

"No matter how you cut it, the US is not scoring at the bottom of the international rankings. The US ranks in the middle of the pack on most international assessments," MR Malkus told news agency AFP.

According to Trump's order, American taxpayers spent nearly $200 billion in federal funds on schools during the pandemic, in addition to the $60 billion already allocated annually for federal school funding.

"In Baltimore, 40 per cent of the high schools have zero students who can do basic mathematics - not even the very simplest of mathematics. They're talking about like adding a few numbers together," Trump said.

Democratic Backlash: "See You in Court"

Trump's executive order has provoked an immediate and forceful response from Democrats.

"We should be focused on helping our kids with math and reading-the basics they need to succeed. Absolutely no one is asking for three out-of-touch billionaires to rip apart the Department of Education over some deranged far-right culture war," said Democratic Senator Patty Murray.

"In taking a wrecking ball to the department, Trump is making it harder for students to get financial aid, jeopardizing the funding schools and families count on every day, and making it easier for predatory businesses to rip students off," she added.

"We know you're just trying to wear us out. But for the record, I am not overwhelmed. My zone isn't flooded. I will fight your illegal behavior until the cows come home, and I'm pretty sure the hundreds of thousands of people who've contacted my office since you started this nonsense are on the same page," said Democratic Senator Tina Smith.

"See you in court," said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

While Ms McMahon will be tasked with dismantling the agency, some programs are congressionally mandated and cannot be abolished without legislative action.

What Does The Department Do

Much of the Education Department's funding for K-12 education - Kindergarten through Grade 12 -  flows through Title I, which supports low-income schools, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These programs help pay for special education services, additional teaching positions, and school counsellors.

One of the department's key responsibilities is managing $1.5 trillion in student loan debt for over 40 million borrowers. It also administers the Pell Grant program and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Under former President Joe Biden, the Education Department made student debt relief a cornerstone of its agenda. Despite a Supreme Court ruling striking down his loan cancellation plan, Biden's administration has forgiven over $175 billion in student debt for 4.8 million borrowers through targeted programs. Trump has strongly criticised Biden's student debt relief, calling it "illegal" and "unfair."

The Education Department's Office for Civil Rights enforces anti-discrimination laws in schools, investigating cases related to race, gender, and disability rights. Under Biden, the office expanded protections for LGBTQ+ students, issued guidance on racial disparities in discipline, and collected data on educational inequities.

Trump's administration has already shifted priorities. The US President has pledged to exclude transgender students from Title IX protections, a crucial law against sex-based discrimination in educational institutions.

Can Trump Shut Down The Department?

No. At least not on his own.

The US President would need approval from Congress with a Senate majority of at least 60 out of 100 senators. Which seems unlikely at this point as the Republicans have only a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

US Teacher Accused Of Sexual Assault Claims Being Targeted For "Good Looks"

An Illinois soccer coach and special education teacher has denied the sexual assault allegations against her, telling police that she is simply "good-looking" and "a good person."

Christina Formella, 30, appeared in court on Monday to face multiple felony charges, including one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault, according to DuPage County officials

Her comments about her appearance and character emerged during an interview with detectives after her arrest during a traffic stop on March 16.

Initially denying the allegations, Formella claimed that people targeted her because she was "good-looking" and "a good person who cared too much about [the victim]," according to court documents obtained by WGN9.

She also alleged that the teen had accessed her phone and sent incriminating messages to himself as part of a blackmail scheme.

Formella came to police attention on March 15 when the victim, then 15, and his mother reported inappropriate sexual contact with the boy's soccer coach and tutor to the Downers Grove Police Department.

A joint investigation by law enforcement and the DuPage County Children's Advocacy Center led authorities to allege that in December 2023, Formella sexually assaulted the student during a tutoring session inside a classroom before the school day began.

The victim's mother reportedly discovered the alleged assault while reviewing her son's text messages.

Downers Grove South High School officials confirmed to The Independent that Formella was immediately placed on administrative leave. She had been working as a special education teacher at the school since August 2020 and began volunteering as a soccer coach for both the boys' and girls' teams in 2021.

During an internal meeting on Monday, Board of Education President Don Renner stated that Formella is no longer allowed on school grounds.

At her court appearance, a judge denied the prosecutor's request to detain Formella before trial. She was released with conditions, including a ban on entering Downers Grove South High School and having contact with anyone under 18.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin called the allegations "extremely disturbing," emphasizing that Formella abused her position of trust and authority. "The type of abuse and behaviour alleged in this case will not be tolerated," he said.

In a statement to the school board, Renner expressed heartbreak for the victim and the broader school community, which he said felt betrayed by the allegations.

"Our top focus now is to support the victim and their family and to ensure the well-being and safety of all of our students," Renner stated, adding that families whose children had direct contact with Formella would be notified.

He also urged students to report any concerning behaviour to police or school officials, stressing that all reports are taken seriously.

The school continues to cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation progresses.

Formella's next court appearance is scheduled for April 14, 2025.

US Suspends Some Efforts To Counter Russian Sabotage As Trump Moves Closer To Putin

Several U.S. national security agencies have halted work on a coordinated effort to counter Russian sabotage, disinformation and cyberattacks, easing pressure on Moscow as the Trump Administration pushes Russia to end its war in Ukraine.

Former President Joe Biden last year ordered his national security team to establish working groups to monitor the issue amid warnings from U.S. intelligence that Russia was escalating a shadow war against Western nations.

The plan was led by the president's National Security Council (NSC) and involved at least seven national security agencies working with European allies to disrupt plots targeting Europe and the United States, seven former officials who participated in the working groups told Reuters.

Before President Donald Trump was inaugurated, his incoming administration was briefed by Biden officials about the efforts and urged to continue monitoring Russia's hybrid warfare campaign, the former U.S. officials said.

However, since Trump took office on Jan. 20 much of the work has come to a standstill, according to eleven current and former officials, all of whom requested anonymity to discuss classified matters. Reuters is the first to report on the full extent of the Biden administration effort and how multiple different U.S. agencies have since paused their work on the issue.

Regular meetings between the National Security Council and European national security officials have gone unscheduled, and the NSC has also stopped formally coordinating efforts across U.S. agencies, including with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department, the current and former officials said.

Reuters could not determine whether the president has ordered the administration to halt all its work monitoring and combatting Russia's campaign, whether agencies were still working to hire additional staff, or if they are making their own policy decisions independent of the White House.

Some officials involved in the working groups said they are concerned that the Trump administration is de-prioritizing the issue despite intelligence warnings. The change follows the unwinding of other Russia-focused projects launched by Biden's administration.

The FBI last month ended an effort to counter interference in U.S. elections by foreign adversaries including Russia and put on leave staff working on the issue at the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Justice also disbanded a team that seized the assets of Russian oligarchs.

The White House has not told career officials who'd previously participated in the effort whether it will recreate the cross-agency working groups, according to the current U.S. officials.

It is unclear to what extent the U.S. is still sharing intelligence related to the sabotage campaign with European allies. UK government officials said that routine intelligence sharing between the United States and the British government continues.

When asked for comment about the suspension of the coordinated efforts, the White House deferred to the NSC.

Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the National Security Council, said that it coordinates "with relevant agencies to assess and thwart threats posed to Americans."

"President Trump has made it abundantly clear that any attack on the U.S. will be met with a disproportionate response," he said.

A senior U.S. official at NATO said the U.S. was still coordinating with its allies on the issue but declined to offer more detail. The CIA, FBI and the State Department declined to comment.

Anitta Hipper, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said she had no specific information to share when asked about the suspension of some intelligence-sharing meetings. She said the EU was coordinating with NATO on countering hybrid threats, which span everything from physical sabotage of critical infrastructure to disinformation campaigns.

New Policy Toward Europe

The pause in the cross-agency effort comes as Trump upends U.S. policy toward Europe and Ukraine, stirring fears among some current and former U.S. and European officials that Ukraine may be forced into a truce favorable to Russia.

In recent weeks, Trump has made statements and policy moves appearing to favor Russia that have drawn criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans. But the president has argued that the conflict in Ukraine has the potential to spiral into World War Three and that improved relations with Russia are in America's strategic interest.

Putin agreed to a proposal by Trump on Tuesday that Russia and Ukraine cease attacking each other's energy infrastructure for 30 days, the Kremlin said following a lengthy phone discussion between the leaders.

Some analysts told Reuters that reducing work to counter Moscow's hybrid war tactics would prove dangerous for the U.S.

"We're choosing to blind ourselves to potential acts of war against us," said Kori Schake, the director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington-based think tank, who has been critical of Trump's engagement with Putin.

Over the last three years, Russia has recruited criminals in European countries for sabotage operations across the continent - including arson, attempted assassinations and planting bombs on cargo aircraft. Russia has also used influence campaigns and cyber operations to erode support for Ukraine, Western intelligence officials told Reuters.
The intelligence officials said the number of sabotage acts by Russia declined at the end of 2024, but warned that they expect Moscow to continue its hybrid warfare while Western support for Ukraine continues.

Asked about the pause in some of Washington's work to track its hybrid warfare campaign, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Trump administration was trying to get rid of "everything ineffective, corrupt and implausible," something he said was "understandable."

He added that Western accusations that Russia commits sabotage in the U.S. and Europe are "empty and ephemeral" and have not been proven.

Shadow War

After Russian forces streamed across Ukraine's border three years ago, Moscow's intelligence agencies launched a shadow war aimed at undercutting the U.S.-led effort to bolster Kyiv's resistance, six Western intelligence and national security officials told Reuters. Congress has approved $175 billion in assistance to Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion three years ago.

Moscow's efforts to retaliate against the West escalated in spring 2024 with arson attacks throughout Europe, including one at a warehouse in London with connections to a Ukrainian-born businessman. Six individuals were charged with aggravated arson for that attack in a British court in November; at least two of them pleaded guilty to accepting payment from a foreign intelligence service. A trial is due to begin in June.

In response to the uptick, Biden directed his national security agencies to increase intelligence sharing with Europe and create task forces to combat Russian operations and ensure attacks did not occur in the U.S., the former U.S. officials said.

American intelligence officials, working with domestic law enforcement, assessed that Moscow intended to target not only Russian dissidents around the world but also other civilians, including those helping Ukraine's war efforts.

The U.S. alerted Germany that Russia was attempting to assassinate the CEO of Rheinmetall, a German manufacturer whose weapons were being used by Ukraine, two former senior U.S. officials said. German law enforcement interrupted the plan. Rheinmetall declined to comment.

By late summer, the National Security Council set up in-person and virtual meetings with European national security officials to share intelligence on plots in Europe and to coordinate investigations, four former senior U.S. officials said.

That led to joint plans for addressing sabotage attacks, including procedures for arrests and a proposal for longer prison sentences for those convicted, four former senior U.S. officials said.

A memo drafted by the U.S. and Britain at the end of 2024 advocated that, among other steps, European countries' law enforcement agencies work more closely to track criminal networks conducting the sabotage. It also proposed that European governments reduce their diplomatic presence in Moscow to force Russia to cut its staffing in European embassies, two senior U.S. officials said.

Some of those steps are still under discussion among European countries, one former senior U.S. official said. The British embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.

In contrast to its Western allies, the Trump administration is currently in talks with Moscow about increasing Russia's diplomatic presence in Washington, one current senior U.S. official said. The White House did not respond to queries about the memo or the move to potentially increase Russia's diplomatic presence.

U.S. agencies, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), have for years tracked Russian influence operations and ransomware attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure. Under Biden, top cybersecurity officials led an interagency team to share with European countries Russia's attempts to influence local elections and how to deter Moscow's attacks on national security systems, one former senior U.S. official said.

The victory of far right, pro-Putin candidate, Calin Georgescu, in the first round of Romania's presidential election in November was annulled by the country's constitutional court after declassified Romanian intelligence reports indicated possible Russian interference - a decision criticized by Trump's Vice President JD Vance. Georgescu and Moscow have denied any meddling.

CISA Deputy Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Reuters the agency had placed on administrative leave personnel working on misinformation and disinformation on its election security team, without elaborating further.

McLaughlin said CISA "remains committed to addressing all cyber threats to U.S. critical infrastructure, including from Russia."

Threat To The Homeland

In another example of cooperation under Biden, the administration dispatched teams from the State Department and other agencies to help European countries investigate damage to several essential undersea cables.

One of the teams traveled to Copenhagen to help in December after Finland seized a tanker suspected of dragging its anchor on the Baltic Sea floor to deliberately damage cable networks, one former and one current senior U.S. official said.

The tanker, the Eagle S, is believed by Western intelligence officials to belong to a shadow fleet of ships Russia uses to evade oil sanctions. Russia has denied its involvement in a spate of cable incidents. Some Western intelligence and national security officials caution there is no smoking gun that signals Moscow's direct responsibility in all of the recent cable cutting incidents.

In mid-2024, American agencies collected intelligence suggesting that Russia might detonate an incendiary device on a cargo or passenger aircraft over U.S. airspace, which provoked alarm in the U.S., multiple former officials told Reuters.

"That was almost psychologically a very different threat than sabotage operations in Europe that were damaging property," one former senior U.S. official said. "Bringing down planes is a whole different category."

While there was no clear evidence that Moscow formulated a plan to attack inside the U.S., the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security crafted strategies for domestic agencies to increase screening of cargo entering the U.S.

U.S. officials were so concerned that Biden directed Jake Sullivan, his national security adviser, and CIA Director Bill Burns to warn Putin and his top aides that if the campaign continued, especially inside the U.S., Washington could list Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism - a designation that would further isolate its economy from the world.

The New York Times first reported the meetings between the Biden officials and the Kremlin.

Since then, no attack has taken place inside the U.S. and the number of sabotage attacks in Europe dropped at the end of 2024, according to three Western intelligence officials, who attributed the change at least in part to vigilance from Western governments and coordination between Europe and the U.S.

Still, multiple Western intelligence officials said they assess that Russia will continue its campaign as long as the U.S. and Europe continues to support Ukraine.

On Camera, Islamabad Locals Loot Laptops After Raid On Fake Call Centre

A raid on a fake call centre in Pakistan's Islamabad led to an unexpected heist at the hands of locals, who took away whatever they could lay their hands on. The loot came after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) raided the support hub operated by Chinese nationals in sector F-11.

The centre was allegedly involved in fraudulent activities and was being run illegally, reports said. Once the authorities entered the premises, so did the locals.

Videos showing men -- young and old -- grabbing laptops, desktops, monitors, keyboards, extensions, and whatever else they could have surfaced on social media. Some even stole furniture and cutlery sets as if it were a free-for-all.

Posting the video on X, a social media user wrote: "Pakistanis have looted a call centre operated by Chinese in Islamabad; hundreds of laptops and electronic components, along with furniture and cutlery, were stolen during the holy month of Ramadan."

The video quickly went viral, and needless to say, people had a field day in the comments section.

"Pakistan is the only country where opening a business is riskier than investing in crypto," said a person.

Another wrote, "Looks like they mistook a call centre for a charity drive: everything from laptops to cutlery gone!"

"China looted the entire Pakistan. Pakistanis looted a few computers and printers of China," read another comment.

According to reports, the call centre was raided after it came under scrutiny for allegedly carrying out fraudulent activities and scamming people from across the world. A group of foreigners, including some Chinese nationals, were allegedly involved in running the racket here.

The raid resulted in the arrest of 24 people, including some foreigners. However, some managed to escape.

Such incidents of public looting are not rare in Pakistan. Last September, a newly opened mall in Karachi was attacked by hundreds of people who forcefully entered the venue and stole clothing items and damaged the property.

They forcefully rushed into the stores and emptied them in no time despite the staff's frantic efforts to control the crowd.

In Melbourne: Polka-Dotted Trees And A Drive Down Australia's Second City

When our limousine turns left and gets on St Kilda Road, a series of polka-dotted trees greet us. I look around for a familiar name. The Queen of Polka Dots, Controversy's Child, the 95-year-old 'problematic' artist. I knew we had set foot in the whimsical world of Yayoi Kusama. To the left, the National Gallery of Victoria says Kusama's polka dots and pumpkins had arrived in Melbourne.

A few minutes later, we cross the Yarra. The river that is the lifeline of this gorgeous 'Second City' of Australia.

A Stunning 'Second City'

Perhaps Melbourne's character stems from being called the 'Second City'. Its easy laidback vibe is light years from Sydney's madness. Rickety old-fashioned trams ply down the city centre. Hop on one, get off at the next station, pay with a smile. The city circle boasts an extensive network of trams that are free to use.

Walking down the gorgeous tree-lined avenues is of course a better bet if you want to get some cardio in to burn all those calories that Melbourne's vibrant food scene thrusts on you. The main train station is Flinders Street. You will stop to gaze, starry-blurry-eyed, at the ornate Victorian facade of Flinders Street station. The building deserves that look.

Melbourne, a city designed to live in, comprises an extensive public transport system comprising trams, trains and buses. Hail an Uber if you really need one.

Mix Of Opposites

Melbourne is an eclectic mix of opposites. Its imposing Victorian buildings stand next to dizzying modern glass-walled skyscrapers. A Starbucks sits opposite to Federal Coffee, a coffee chain that borrows its name from Australia's erstwhile pride - the Federal Coffee Palace. That hotel, opened in 1888, is among the buildings Melburnians most regret having lost.

Federal Coffee tries to distil some of that pride into its opulent cafe menu: complete with seating on the porch of Melbourne's GPO, an intimidating Victorian-era building with high arches and off-white pillars. It is the perfect place to people-watch. It's perfect for your Instagram feed.

Across the road from the GPO building is an array of boutiques and brands. You will find some of the prettiest Zara and H&M stores in this area. In the alleyways, you will find adult entertainment stores jostling for space with eye-watering stationery shops.

Stop by a Miligram outlet to pick up the cutest porcelain mugs. Treat yourself to a quiet afternoon thumbing through the books at Readings, Melbourne's much-loved book shop that comes with a separate Kids' store. You might even walk in on a book launch.

Travellers' shops and souvenir kiosks are the other characters in the city of Melbourne. You can find practically anything to take back home from a travellers' shop. Kangaroo meat, sure. Kangaroo scrotum? Why not. Crocodile jerky? Certainly. Boomerangs in all sizes adorn the shelves of souvenir stores here, as do aboriginal art. Sometimes, together. You will obviously not leave Australia without a boomerang or a few. It's Down Under, after all.

A World-Class Casino And The Best Of Japanese Cuisine

While Flinders Street and Federation Square make for much old-world charm, it is the sidewalk by the Yarra where Melbourne's nights really take off. Between the King's Bridge and the Queen's Bridge lies The Crown. It's a casino complex straight out of Vegas. What goes on in and into The Crown, stays there. Mostly the Australian dollars that you exchanged at the airport.

The main part about any casino is knowing when to leave. When you eventually do, ignoring the clarion calls of the roulette tables at The Crown, stop for a meal at Nobu.

Nobu is a rage all over the world. The Japanese fine-dining restaurant, the world's most famous Japanese restaurant line, is a brainchild of Hollywood legend Robert De Niro and Japanese celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa.

The story goes: After years of drudgery, Matsuhisa threw in all his savings and luck with a sushi joint he went to work at in Los Angeles. Matsuhisa bought the place and opened his eponymous restaurant, choosing his family name for it.

In 1987, he opened Matsuhisa Beverly Hills. The sushi restaurant became a must-visit for everyone who was anyone in Hollywood.

Robert De Niro was one of the regulars at Matsuhisa. De Niro, known to the world as a Hollywood great, barely made a difference to the chef from Honshu, Japan. Nobu Matsuhisa did not know what Robert De Niro was. He only knew the Godfather as a patron and served him food like he would any other guest at Matsuhisa.

De Niro loved Nobu's Black Cod Miso. Soon, Matsuhisa found himself asking Robert - "Bob" - to wait. De Niro suggested they work together on a new restaurant chain. Matsuhisa suggested they hold it off till he paid his cumulative debt off.

Meanwhile, Matsuhisa Beverly Hills found itself a place in Hollywood conversations. Four years since De Niro made Matsuhisa an offer he postponed, he picked up the phone again. This time, Nobu said yes.

Thirty-one years since the first Nobu opened in New York, it has become a name to reckon with.

Early To Rise And Early To Play

Nobu Melbourne is teeming with patrons on the evening we walk in and find a (high) table for two. The low tables are all either occupied or reserved. We had just walked out of The Crown, a crisp hundred-dollar note in hand, to get dinner. Australia is notorious for its early dining scene. Restaurants here shutter-shut at 9.30 pm. By 10 pm, you will have to rely on cold salad and bread from a mini mart.

Australians start their day early. They also love to wrap up early. Weekends are blissful here.

It is late-evening on a Sunday and Melburnians are by the Yarra; walking, making merry, listening to an impromptu stand-up, laughing, living life.

I wistfully answer yet another ping from the office.

El Dorado Down Under

Melbourne owes much of its wealth and fame to the 1850s Victorian Gold Rush. In 30 years of the Gold Rush, 'Marvellous Melbourne' transformed into one of the world's wealthiest and largest metropolises; a real-life El Dorado, if you will.

Over the next century, Melbourne saw a land boom, much expansion on the back of the Gold Rush, and immigrants flocking to its shores after the Second World War. The city embraced its immigrants with open arms and let them define much of it.

As a result, Melbourne's history goes back 40,000 years to its first Aboriginal Victorians, and now finds its culture shaped by immigrants from world over.

Melbourne's 'Little India' is a block of stores and restaurants from the Indian subcontinent in Dandenong. You can find everything Indian from yellow dal to panipuri; little bits of India that the diaspora carries wherever it makes a home.

In Melbourne, Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Greek, Malaysian, Indonesian, French and Italian restaurants sit next to OG Aussie fare. You will find a "Dropout Chaiwala" from Ahmedabad on Elizabeth Street. Turn the corner, and there's an Italian Trattoria. Across the road is Kim Sing, a Chinese restaurant. A few metres down, Bistrot d'Orsay serves up some classic French food. On the other side is a Meat & Wine Co outlet, where you find yourself drooling over the juiciest of kangaroo skewers; pomp and show included.

The Apostles And A Glowing Warning

My extended weekend in Melbourne comes with a blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse of a wallaby on the way leading to the Great Ocean Road. This 243-kilometre "war memorial" is the world's most scenic drive. It is also the world's largest war memorial.

Built by World War I servicemen as a way to memorialise their fellow soldiers killed in the war, the Great Ocean Road today holds a special place in Australia's psyche. With tourists and locals alike.

On this drive you will find the 12 Apostles. It is a place where you see the complete beauty, wrath, and power of erosion. The Southern Ocean carved these limestone formations over a period of ten million years.

The name '12 Apostles' is a bit of a tourist trap, given that there were never 12 of the limestone rock formations. Only nine existed at any point, out of which, there are only seven standing today. In the last 20 years, Australia has lost two of its apostles. The ones that stood tide and time are quite the vision.

You'll find snake warnings and bird-identifier boards on your way to the 12 Apostles in Port Campbell National Park.

In Australia, they say, stay away from the over-bright and shiny creatures; they will sting you dead. Not the bright polka dots. They will only stir you alive.

FACT SHEET

Visa: Indians need a visa to enter Australia. It is best to apply for a visa well in advance since Australia takes time to process a tourist visa. You could also try for an express visa at a higher cost.

What To Keep In Mind: While Melbourne has a cornucopia of food from world over, finding vegetarian fare might take a bit of time. Try looking for vegan options if you aren't too sure of the vegetarian food on offer.
