Kishan, Iyer's Troubles Mount; Duo's T20 WC Chances Bleak After BCCI Axing

Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were on Wednesday omitted from BCCI's Annual Player Contracts for Team India (Senior Men) for the 2023-24 season (October 1st, 2023 to September 30th, 2024). Despite featuring regularly in the Indian cricket team in recent times, the duo's sacking is being seen as a strong message by the BCCI for those who are ignoring domestic cricket. While Ishan Kishan was last part of the Test squad during India's Tour of South Africa in December, Shreyas Iyer played the first two Tests of the ongoing series against England. 

Yet, the BCCI removed the two senior player from the contracts list. In fact, the BCCI made it a point to single out the duo's absence with the following line in the list: "Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations." 

Now, according to a report in The Indian Express, the sacking from the BCCI central contract list makes the chances of the duo bleak for the 2024 T20 World Cup. 

The duo are senior members of their respective sides in  the IPL. Shreyas Iyer is expected to lead Kolkata Knight Riders while Ishan Kishan will play for Mumbai Indians. However, the report added that there is a chance that they would be considered for national team selection only of they feature in domestic cricket. “Ishan was granted a break that he sought. But he hasn't reported to the NCA or the state unit, but continues to train alone. Under the circumstances, there was no chance for the BCCI to offer a central contract. Similarly with Shreyas, we went by the medical reports. The door is still open for them provided they play domestic cricket regularly,” sources in the know told the newspaper.

While there was no official reason given on why Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dropped, one line in BCCI's release gives a strong hint. "The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team," the BCCI stated.

When Ishan Kishan had left India's Tour of South Africa, the BCCI had said on December 17: "Mr Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicket-keeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad."

While it was expected that Ishan Kishan would play domestic cricket from his time away from the national team, the wicketkeeper-batter chose to remain absent from his state team Jharkhand's Ranji Trophy matches. Despite Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid clearly mentioning that he need to play some form of cricket to regain his place in the Indian squad, Ishan Kishan ignored the instruction.

In fact, he only made a return to competitive cricket on Tuesday at the DY Patil T20 Cup.

"Mud-Slinging Is Happening": Ex-India Star On Hanuma Vihari Controversy

Former Indian cricket team batter Aakash Chopra had his say on the ongoing controversy surrounding Hanuma Vihari's allegations on the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). Chopra pointed out that although there has been 'mudslinging' from both sides, he believes Vihari's version of the events. Earlier, Vihari alleged 'mistreatment' from the cricket board and said that he was asked to resign from captaincy after an altercation with a teammate whose father is a politician. Vihari also posted a copy of his allegations on social media along with signatures from his teammates but ACA claimed that the players were 'forced'.

"Mud-slinging is happening, the blame game is happening from both sides. From a players' fraternity, you want to trust the player always. Hanuma Vihari is not just any player. He batted for Andhra with one hand when he had a fracture in his hand," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"He has had an incredible journey. He has helped Andhra qualify. He has got the team together. I have huge respect for him, whether it was the Sydney match where he played with a torn hamstring and put his career on the line, and then he batted one-handed for Andhra. I would want to actually believe Hanuma Vihari's version," he added.

Meanwhile, ACA has accused Vihari of creating a 'class difference' in the team under his captaincy with a few players complaining about his misbehaviour and use of foul language.

"Moreover, players had previously complained to the Andhra Team Managers Association that Vihari used foul language and misbehaved with fellow players during the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. It was stated that due to the behaviour of Hanuma Vihari, there was a class difference in the team," ACA said.

Elon Musk Once Used To Sleep On Tesla Factory Floor. Here's Why

An old video of Elon Musk talking about his sleeping habits is going viral on social media. In the clip, Mr Musk, who was speaking at the 29th Annual Baron Investment Conference in New York, revealed that his primary residences weren't any of his houses or villas but Tesla factories in Nevdad and Fremont for almost three years. The billionaire also revealed that he used to sleep on the floor under his desk in a bid to motivate his employees.

An X user shared the video on Tuesday with a quote which the user attributed to Musk. "The reason I slept on the floor was not because I couldn't go across the road and be at a hotel. It was because I wanted my circumstances to be worse than anyone else at the company. Whenever they felt pain, I wanted mine to be worse," it read.

Mr Musk said he used to sleep on a couch in the factories but moved to sleep on the floor under his desk so his team could see him during shift changes. He also said that sleeping on the floor was uncomfortable and made him smell like metal dust. However, he revealed that he slept on the floor to give assurance to the employees that their leader was with them instead of "drinking Mai Tai on some island".

Since being shared, the video has accumulated more than 542,000 views. In the comments section, users praised Mr Musk for his dedication to his work. "Elon is a bit bizarre, but that's exactly why he's so successful.  Boring people prefer to seek security and comfort," wrote one user.

More Women May Be Psychopaths Than Previously Thought, Claims Expert

While it was commonly believed that most psychopaths are men, an expert suggests there might be way more women psychopaths than we thought. Recent studies indicate that male psychopaths may be overrepresented compared to females, at a ratio of 6 to 1. Dr Clive Boddy, a professor at Anglia Ruskin University specialising in corporate psychopathy, challenges this ratio, suggesting it could be as low as 1.2 to 1, potentially five times higher for females.  

“People generally attribute psychopathic characteristics to males rather than to females,” Dr Boddy said in a report. “So even when females display some of the key traits associated with psychopathy - such as being insincere, deceitful, antagonistic, unempathetic and lacking in emotional depth - because these are seen as male characteristics they may not be labelled as such, even when they should be,” he added.

Psychopaths are commonly characterised by a lack of empathy and guilt, engaging in antisocial behaviour, frequent lying, and demonstrating traits of ruthlessness, narcissism, and manipulation. “Psychopaths are after money, power and control,” said Dr Boddy. 

“The behaviour of female psychopaths seems to be subtle enough and less obvious than male psychopaths and therefore they're not recognised as much,” Dr Boddy said.

“A small but mounting body of evidence describes female psychopaths as prone to expressing violence verbally rather than physically, with the violence being of a relational and emotional nature, more subtle and less obvious than that expressed by male psychopaths,” he added.

Dr Boddy also pointed out a problem with a test for psychopathy, the Levenson self-report psychopathy scale (LSRP). He mentioned it seems to be more geared towards men. The first part looks at emotional detachment, selfishness, lack of empathy, and manipulation. But in the second part, which checks for the psychopathic lifestyle, the emphasis is on violence and antisocial behaviour, creating a gender-specific bias in psychopathy assessments. “The secondary element, and the measures for it, were largely based on studies of criminals who were in jail at the time and psychopathic - so the feeling is, among researchers these days, that those measures are just not suited to identifying female psychopathy,” he said.

Dr Boddy mentions that female psychopaths use deceit and seduction more than male psychopaths to gain social and financial advantages. He said, “Female psychopaths, while not as severely psychopathic or as psychopathic as often as males are, have nevertheless been underestimated in their incidence levels and are therefore more of a potential threat to business and society than anyone previously suspected. This has implications for the criminal justice system because current risk management decisions involving partners and children may be faulty. It also has implications for organisational leadership selection decisions because female leaders cannot automatically be assumed to be more honest, caring and concerned with issues such as corporate social responsibility.” 

Dr Clive Boddy has been studying the influence of psychopaths in the workplace since 2005. He is a leading academic in the field, having published extensively on corporate psychopathy. His research focuses on toxic leadership, specifically examining how corporate psychopaths affect employees, organisations, and society.

Well, as per a 2014 NDTV report, sparks first flew between the actress and the badminton star when they met at the inaugural Indian Badminton League in 2013. 

Mathias Boe was part of the Lucknow-based team Awadhe Warriors while Taapsee Pannu was the brand ambassador of champions Hyderabad Hotshots. It may be noted that Taapsee was one of the leading actresses in Telugu before shifting focus to Bollywood, having made her acting debut in the Telugu film industry in 2010.

Cheerleaders for each other

In 2014, rumours of the two dating picked pace, when Mathias Boe was playing at the India Open and Taapsee Pannu often cheered him on from the stands. That's not all. Over the next few years, both Taapsee and Mathias were seen celebrating each other's personal and professional milestones on social media.  

For instance, in 2017, when Taapsee Pannu and the cast of Pink were given the opportunity to meet the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, the actress shared the happy news on X [formerly Twitter]. 10-Year Milestone

Earlier this year, Taapsee Pannu reflected on her ten-year relationship with Mathias Boe in a podcast with Raj Shamani. When asked if it was difficult to find people to date after becoming an actor, she said, “I don't know because I have been with the same person -- Mathias Boe -- for the past 10 years. I started acting 13 years ago and I met him the year I was making my debut in Bollywood, and I have been with the same person since then. I have no thoughts of leaving him or being with anyone else because I am way too happy in the relationship… I feel you are in a good relationship when you do not feel the baggage of the relationship. I always knew that you have to be 'a man' to be in a relationship with me and not a 'boy'".

During a 2023 AMA session on Instagram, she was also asked when she planned to get married. To this, Taapsee Pannu had joked, “So when am I getting married? I am not pregnant, as yet. So not anytime soon. I will let you all know.”

"I'm Everything Because Of Him": Sameera Reddy Remembers Pankaj Udhas

Sameera Reddy, who featured in Pankaj Udhas' iconic music video Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, remembered the music legend in an interview with Hindustan Times. Reacting to the music legend's death, Sameera told Hindustan Times, "I just heard, I am having chills while talking to you right now. I have tears in my eyes. I am heartbroken. It's sad that we have lost him." Pankaj Udhas died on Monday after his prolonged battle with an illness. The news of his death was confirmed by his family. They issued a statement which read, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26 February due to a prolonged illness."

FYI, The music video Ahista was based on the story of O Henry's The Gifts Of Magi. Sameera, playing the female lead in the song, sold her hair to buy a helmet for her love interest. Recalling the impact of the song on her career, Sameera told Hindustan Times, "Today I am everything I am because of him. They spotted me and chose me. I was a young kid with no aspirations and didn't know what I was doing, but somehow I became a part of this cult song, it's one of his biggest hits. It was a privilege and honour that I was a part of it."

Sameera also recalled her first meeting with Pankaj Udhas. "I was very nervous when I met him, I was shaking and so scared because it was the first time I was facing the camera. I remember thinking, 'What have I got myself into?' But, he was just smiling through it all. He was so relaxed and never intimidated being a senior, there was no pressure," she said.

After a few years of the song's release, when Sameera met the music maestro, his warm gestures etched a permanent place in Sameera's heart. The actor recalled, "I remember meeting him at a party after a few years of its release when I became an actress, I went up to him and took a bow and said, 'People spotted me because of you, I am who I am because of you.' He was so touched and pleased. He was such a warm and humble personality. He smiled and said, 'It was only because of your hardwork'. I feel that sometimes you just have to be chosen and I think that song chose me and till today people remember that song."

A few years back, Sameera shared a snippet of the song's video on her Instagram and revealed she acted in the video because it was filmed in Australia and she had no intention of pursuing a career in films at that time. She wrote in the caption, "To where it all began... What an incredible start to my career. I only did this music video because it was shot in Australia! I had no interest in acting at the time. उत्तर प्रदेश के नोएडा में संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा ने ट्रैक्टर मार्च का ऐलान किया है. भारतीय किसान यूनियन (बीकेयू) और संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा (एसकेएम) द्वारा आज ट्रैक्टर मार्च निकाली जाएगी, जिसके चलते नोएडा पुलिस ने लोगों के लिए ट्रैफिक एडवाइजरी भी जारी कर दी है. इस एडवाइजरी में यात्रियों को दिल्ली-नोएडा सीमा क्षेत्र में संभावित व्यवधानों और बदलावों के बारे में चेतावनी दी गई है.

"I Made A Mistake": Arvind Kejriwal On Sharing "Defamatory" Video

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday told the Supreme Court that he made a mistake by retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee related to the BJP IT Cell.

A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, without issuing notice on a plea of Mr Kejriwal challenging a Delhi High Court order which upheld summons issued to him as an accused in the criminal defamation case, asked the complainant whether he wanted to close the matter in view of the chief minister's apology.

The bench also asked the trial court not to take up the defamation case involving Mr Kejriwal till March 11.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Mr Kejriwal, said, "I can say this much that I made a mistake by retweeting." In its judgment dated February 5, the high court had said that reposting alleged libellous content would attract the defamation law.

The high court had said a sense of responsibility has to be attached while retweeting content about which one does not have knowledge and added that retweeting of defamatory content must invite penal, civil as well as tort action if the person retweeting it does not attach a disclaimer.

The chief minister had said in the high court that the trial court failed to appreciate that his tweet was not intended or likely to harm the complainant, Vikas Sankrityayan.

Mr Kejriwal's plea before the high court said the trial court erred in not providing any reasons for issuing the summons and the orders were 'ex-facie' devoid of judicial application of mind.

Mr Sankrityayan claimed the YouTube video titled 'BJP IT Cell Part II' was circulated by Rathee, who lives in Germany, "wherein a number of false and defamatory allegations were made".

WTC Points Table: What Victory Against England In 4th Test Means For India

Team India on Monday inflicted a first-ever series loss on England in the 'Bazball' era, beating the visitors by 5 wickets in the fourth Test in Ranchi. The hosts, who lost the series opener in Hyderabad, relied on youth for the ongoing series and decision has paid off, with India going 3-1 up in the series, ahead of the final game in Dharamsala next month. Chasing 192 to win, India were moving strongly at 84/0 before the England spinners troubled them on the either side on Lunch on Day 2. However, Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten to take across the finishing line.

England had reduced India to 120/5 after Lunch before Gill (52 not out) and Jurel (39 not out) survived a tricky period to seal the win and series for India.

With the win, India consolidated their 2nd position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table for the 2023-25 cycle. With five wins from eight matches, India's PCT rose to 64.58 from 59.52.

New Zealand sit top of the WTC points table with a PCT of 75. The Kiwis  have won three of their four games in the current cycle.

Gill and Jurel's unbeaten 72-run stand played a pivotal role after Shaoib Bashir and Tom Hartley inflicted a flurry of wickets in a quick session.

The second session saw momentum shift like a pendulum, in favour of both teams. Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill continued to drive India's score but Shoaib Bashir's arrival forced India to go on the backfoot.

He dismissed Jadeja for 4 and, on the next ball, got Sarfaraz Khan for a golden duck. Jurel came in and had a few nervous moments but settled on quickly.

As England made India work hard for each run, both batters showed grit throughout their stay as the equation slowly started to come down. With 20 runs needed, Gill opened his arms and struck back-to-back sixes to bring India within touching distance of victory.

He raised his bat for a well deserved half century and the crowd stood up to applaud the 24-year-old for his valiant effort.

Jurel scored a boundary and then picked up a double to get India across the finishing line and seal the series.

Gill and Jurel remained unbeaten with scores of 52 and 39, respectively. This is India's 17th straight series win at home.

प्रतिबंधित स्टुडेंट इस्लामिक मूवमेंट ऑफ़ इंडिया (SIMI) संगठन का सदस्य हनीफ शेख को 22 साल बाद गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया है. उसके खिलाफ 2001 में दिल्ली के एनएफसी थाने में यूएपीए और राजद्रोह के तहत केस दर्ज हुआ था, तबसे उसकी तलाश की जा रही थी. वह SIMI की मैगजीन 'इस्लामिक मूवमेंट' (उर्दू संस्करण) का संपादक था और पिछले 25 सालों के दौरान उसने कई मुस्लिम युवाओं को पढ़ाकर बहकाया है. 'इस्लामिक मूवमेंट' (उर्दू संस्करण) मैगजीन पर छपा 'हनीफ हुडाई' नाम ही पुलिस के पास उपलब्ध एकमात्र सुराग था, जिसके कारण उसकी पहचान स्थापित नहीं हो पाई थी. पुलिस टीम पिछले 4 साल से उसका पीछा कर रही थी.

2002 में हनीफ को भगोड़ा घोषित किया गया था

बता दें कि आरोपी महाराष्ट्र के भुसावल का रहने वाला है. स्पेशल सेल के डीसीपी अंकित सिंह के मुताबिक हनीफ शेख एक कुख्यात सिमी आतंकवादी है. वह महाराष्ट्र में यूएपीए अधिनियम और अन्य राष्ट्रविरोधी गतिविधियों के अन्य मामलों में भी शामिल है. दिल्ली के एक मामले में साल 2002 में हनीफ शेख को अदालत ने भगोड़ा घोषित कर दिया था. हनीफ महाराष्ट्र, मध्य प्रदेश, दिल्ली, कर्नाटक और केरल में सिमी संगठन की बैठकों में भाग लेने और बैठके आयोजित करने में सक्रिय तौर पर शामिल था.

जाल बिछाकर पुलिस ने किया गिरफ्तार

पुलिस टीम को एक विशेष जानकारी मिली थी कि आरोपी ​​हनीफ हुडाई ने अपनी पहचान मोहम्मद हनीफ के रूप में बदल ली है और वह महाराष्ट्र के भुसावल में एक उर्दू स्कूल में शिक्षक है. इसके बाद 22 फरवरी को जाल बिछाकर पुलिस ने उसे भुसावल से पकड़ लिया. हनीफ शेख ने साल 1997 में मारुल जलगांव से डिप्लोमा किया था. वह 1997 में सिमी संगठन में शामिल हो गया था और 'अंसर' (पूर्णकालिक कार्यकर्ता) बन गया. सिमी कार्यकर्ताओं के संपर्क में आने के बाद वह अत्यधिक कट्टरपंथी बन गया. सिमी संगठन में शामिल होने के बाद हनीफ शेख ने सिमी के साप्ताहिक कार्यक्रमों में भाग लेना शुरू कर दिया और मुस्लिम युवाओं को संगठन में शामिल करने के लिए कट्टरपंथी बनाना भी शुरू कर दिया.

हनीफ ने मुसलमानों पर अत्यााचर पर लिखे थे भड़काऊ लेख

उसके उत्साह से प्रभावित होकर सिमी के तत्कालीन अध्यक्ष साहिद बदर ने साल 2001 में हनीफ शेख को सिमी पत्रिका 'इस्लामिक मूवमेंट' के उर्दू संस्करण का संपादक बनाया था. उसने पत्रिका में मुसलमानों पर हो रहे अत्याचारों को गलत तरीके से उजागर करते हुए कई भड़काऊ लेख लिखे थे. इसके बाद उसे सिमी मुख्यालय, जाकिर नगर, दिल्ली में एक कमरा दिया गया था. हनीफ शेख का सफदर हुसैन नागोरी, अब्दुस शुभान कुरेशी उर्फ ​​तौकीर, नोमान बदर, शाहनाज हुसैन, सैफ नाचैन, मोहम्मद के साथ करीबी रिश्ता था. खालिद, दानिश रियाज़, अब्दुल्ला दानिश और अन्य भी सिमी के सदस्य थे.

2001 से हनीफ शेख की तलाश में थी पुलिस

साल 2001 में पुलिस की छापेमारी के समय हनीफ शेख अन्य लोगों के साथ मौके से फरार हो गया था और भूमिगत हो गया था. इसके बाद हनीफ जलगांव और फिर भुसावल चला गया था. गिरफ्तारी से बचने के लिए वह लगातार अपने ठिकाने बदलता रहता था. वह भुसावल में एक नगर निगम स्कूल में उर्दू शिक्षक के तौर पर पढ़ा रहा था. उसने उत्तर प्रदेश, मध्य प्रदेश, गुजरात आदि स्थानों का दौरा करने कई युवाओं को सिमी में शामिल होने के लिए प्रेरित करने की बात भी स्वीकार की है.

'वहादत-ए-इस्लाम' से नए संगठन की शुरुआत की

सिमी संगठन पर प्रतिबंध लगने के बाद से अधिकांश सक्रिय सदस्य बिखर गए थे. उनमें से कुछ ने स्वतंत्र रूप से अपनी आतंकवादी गतिविधियां जारी रखी हैं और कई विस्फोटों और अन्य राष्ट्र विरोधी गतिविधियों में शामिल रहे हैं. समय बीतने के साथ वरिष्ठ सदस्यों ने 'वहादत-ए-इस्लाम' के से नए संगठन शुरू किया. इस संगठन के अधिकांश सदस्य सिमी से हैं. इस संगठन का मूल एजेंडा मुस्लिम युवाओं को एकजुट करना और कट्टरपंथी इस्लाम के सिद्धांत का प्रचार करना है.

आरोपी हनीफ शेख वहादत-ए-इस्लाम के थिंक टैंक सदस्यों में से एक है और महाराष्ट्र और आसपास के राज्यों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहा है.  वो प्रतिबंधित संगठन सिमी के साथ-साथ वहादत-ए-इस्लाम के एजेंडे के समर्थन और फंडिंग के लिए दान की आड़ में पैसा इकठ्ठा करने में शामिल है. हनीफ के 3 भाई और 2 बहनें हैं. हनीफ पर अलग अलग राज्यों में 4 मामले दर्ज हैं.

1st Time In Indian History: R Ashwin Surpasses Anil Kumble For Major Feat

Star India off-spinner Ravichandra Ashwin on Sunday scripted a huge record during the 4th Test against England in Ranchi. On Day 3 of the contest, Ashwin struck thrice in the second session as India reduced England to 120/5 at Tea. During his three-wicket burst, Ashwin became India's leading wicket-taker in home Tests. Ashwin surpassed former India captain Anil Kumble in the elite list, scalping his 350th, 351st and 352nd wickets. Kumble, who represented India from 1993 to 2008, picked 350 wickets in Tests on home soil.

Ashwin is now the only player to pick more than 350 Test wicket in India. He got the wicket of Ollie Pope to achieve the feat.

On the opening day of the 4th Test, Ashwin had also claimed his 100th Test wicket against England. He became the first player to complete a century of wickets for India against the Three Lions.

Last week, Ashwin reached the 500 Test wickets milestone on Day 2 of the Rajkot Test and even attended the press conference after the end of the day's play but had to fly back home because of an emergency. He returned from home on Sunday and bagged his 501st Test wicket, prompting an emotional note from his wife Prithi.

It isn't yet fully known what the emergency was for Ashwin and his family but his wife Prithi summed up the nature of the situation, saying those were the longest 48 hours for the family.

"We chased the 500 to Hyderabad, it didn't happen. To Vizag, it didn't happen. So I just bought a ton of sweets and gave it to everyone at home at 499. 500 came and went quietly. Till it didn't. A lot happened between 500 and 501. Longest 48 hours of our lives," Ashwin's wife Prithi wrote in a post on Instagram.

"But this is about the 500. And the 499 before that. What a phenomenal achievement. What a phenomenal guy. I am insanely proud of you Ravi Ashwin. We love you!" she added.

England Great Calls Ranchi Pitch A 'Shocker', After Root's Ton Does U-Turn

The pitch at Ranchi for the fourth India vs England Test has been under lot of focus. Though so far, there are demons as such which are likely to create a noise, the discussions around it have been immense. From confusing Ben Stokes on the eve of the Test match to being referred to as 'shocker, the Ranchi pitch has seen it all. On Saturday, on Day 2 of the game, Ollie Robinson gifted away his wicket after making a career-best 58 that resulted in England's first innings ending at 353 even as Joe Root remained unbeaten on 122.

In the middle, of those two posts Vaughan lauded Joe Root for shunning the aggressive 'Bazball approach' and scoring a ton. "Lovely to see Common sense Ball .. #INDvsENG," he wrote.

Clearly, the way England batter Root dealt with the Indian bowling and the pitch made Vaughan change his opinion. 

In their reply, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (2) cheaply to be 34 for one at lunch, trailing England by 319 runs. Veteran James Anderson saw the back of Rohit with a delivery that moved away slightly off the surface after pitching on a perfect length, taking edge from Indian captain's bat that was taken by Ben Foakes.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (27 batting) was his usual confident self and giving him company was Shubman Gill (4) at the break.

England added 51 valuable runs to their overnight total of 302/7 as the Indian attack failed to make early penetration. The last five England batters added 241 runs after being 112/5 at lunch on the opening day.

While Mohammed Siraj (2/78) erred in his line and length, debutant Akash Deep could not add to his tally of three wickets to return with 3/38 from 19 overs.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja took all the three wickets to return with 4/67 from his 32.5 overs.

Root, who dug in deep with his classical century spanning a little more than six hours, remained stranded on 122 from 274 balls (10x4).

"We Are Aware": Centre On Indians Forced To Fight Russia-Ukraine War

The Centre today acknowledged that some Indians are entangled in Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine, stating that the government is coordinating with its Russian counterpart to facilitate their release.

Yesterday, reports emerged that dozens of Indians were allegedly duped into military service in Russia. The unsuspecting Indians were promised support jobs but were ultimately enlisted in the Russian army, receiving misleading translations of documents and undergoing military training against their initial understanding.

"We are aware that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army. The Indian Embassy has regularly taken up this matter with the relevant Russian authorities for their early discharge. We urge all Indian nationals to exercise due caution and stay away from this conflict," said Randhir Jaiswal, external affairs spokesperson, in a statement today.

The family of one of the men, Sufiyan from Hyderabad, along with AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, yesterday sought the intervention of the Centre and the External Affairs ministry to secure the safe evacuation of the trapped Indian nationals and take stringent action against the fraudulent agents responsible.

Imran, Sufiyan's brother, revealed the deceptive tactics employed by agents associated with Faisal Khan, who runs a YouTube channel named 'Baba Vlogs'. The unsuspecting men were allegedly promised support jobs but were ultimately enlisted in the Russian army.

With nine Indian men reportedly within the Ukrainian borders, facing danger and injuries, the distressed families seek help from the Centre. Mr Owaisi formally wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking intervention to bring back the affected Indians. 

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its third year.

To The Moon And Back: Brief History Of Famous Lunar Landings

A spaceship built by a company in Texas is poised for lunar touchdown on Thursday, returning America to the Moon after more than five decades in what promises to be a historic first for the private sector.

Here's a look back at notable attempts -- both successful and unsuccessful -- at landing on Earth's cosmic companion.

First survivable landing

The Soviet Union led the United States early on in their Cold War space race, achieving numerous firsts including putting the first satellite in orbit and first man in space.

On February 3, 1966 it added to this impressive list the first soft touchdown on lunar soil with its Luna 9 probe, which used retrograde thrusters and inflatable airbags to cushion its landing.

Equipped with a radiation detector and panoramic camera, Luna 9 sent the first images back from the Moon's surface.

Writing on Russianspaceweb.com, space historian Anatoly Zak recalled that "astronomers at Jodrell Bank observatory near Manchester, UK, were the first to publish intercepted images from Luna-9 on February 4, though in distorted form," beating the official release by several days.

Despite its early wins, the Soviet space program was beset by mismanagement and bureaucratic gridlock, eventually falling behind the better run and funded American program. Half a century after its last Moon mission, Russia failed in a 2023 attempt to land a robot, underscoring its decline as a space power.

Project Apollo

In 1961, president John F. Kennedy proposed to Congress that the US "should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

The result was Apollo, which cost $300 billion adjusted for inflation, employed 400,000 people at its peak and landed a total of six spacecraft and 12 astronauts between 1969 and 1972.

Apollo 11 was the first crewed touchdown on July 20, 1969 with astronaut Neil Armstrong proclaiming his "giant leap for mankind" as he stepped off the Eagle lander's ladder onto the Sea of Tranquility.

Apollo 13 was meant to be the third, but an onboard explosion -- accompanied by the famous words "Houston, we've had a problem here" -- forced the crew to shelter in their Lunar Module, slingshot around the Moon and rapidly return to Earth.

Nevertheless, the "successful failure" of Apollo 13 "engaged worldwide interest, demonstrated the capability of the crew and mission support teams, and came to represent a defining moment in NASA history," according to the nonprofit Planetary Society.

China rising

China achieved the first soft lunar landing, as opposed to a hard impact with a probe, in 37 years with its Chang'e-3 mission in 2013.

Named after the Chinese goddess of the Moon, it was followed up in 2019 with Chang'e-4, the world's first successful landing on the far side of the Moon, while in 2020, Chang'e-5 carried out China's first lunar sample return mission from a region known as Oceanus Procellarum, or the Ocean of Storms.

China's astonishing successes in space have proved concerning for the United States, with NASA administrator Bill Nelson declaring the dawn of a new space race and suggesting China wants to annex lunar territory in the guise of scientific discovery.

China is targeting 2030 for its first crewed mission. Though the US wants to return astronauts in 2026, its timeline threatens to drag, while China has in recent years kept to its space promises.

India and Japan, meanwhile, are the latest members of the lunar soft landing club, with the former's Chandrayaan-3 mission to the south pole costing just $75 million.

Water bears on the Moon?

Houston-based Intuitive Machines is the fourth private moon shot. In January, Astrobotic's Peregrine lander sprung a leak early on its journey and was brought back to burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

Attempts by an Israeli nonprofit in 2019 and a Japanese company in 2023 both ended in crash landings.

In the case of Israel's Beresheet probe, there may well have been survivors: thousands of microscopic animals called tardigrades that can withstand extreme radiation, sizzling heat, the coldest temperatures of the universe, and decades without food.

Also known as water bears, they were placed in suspended animation encased in an epoxy, meaning it might be possible to revive them in the future.

But, Virat and Anushka's announcement on February 20 confirmed that De Villiers was correct. As the birth of Akaay was confirmed, fans unleashed memes on social media, targeting the former South Africa and Royal Challengers Bangalore batter.

While the circumstances leading to the chase remain unclear, the video has sparked debate about appropriate police pursuit procedures and the potential risks associated with such maneuvers.

Reacting to the incident, Assistant Commissioner of Police Nimish Dasharath Patil said, "Today a video is going viral on social media according to which a car i20 is running in reverse gear on the elevated road. The driver is being chased by a police vehicle. On getting more information about the incident, it was found that it was running on elevated at around 9.30-10.00 pm last night."

American Dancer Arrested In Russia For Alleged $51 Support To Ukraine

A dual US-Russian citizen, 33-year-old ballerina Ksenia Karelina, has been detained in Russia on suspicion of treason. Moscow officials claim she donated $51 to Ukraine's war effort through the Ukrainian organization Razom, allegedly benefiting the country's army. Ms Karelina appeared in court blindfolded and shackled, as reported by Business Insider. 

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed, “Since February 2022, she has been proactively collecting funds in the interests of one of the Ukrainian organizations, which were subsequently used to purchase tactical medicine items, equipment, weapons and ammunition by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”

“In addition, the citizen in question repeatedly took part in public actions in support of the Kyiv regime while in the United States,” the agency added, according to the Moscow Times.

Ms Karelina, who manages a spa in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, reportedly faced her first arrest on January 27 in Yekaterinburg, her hometown. The local police accused her of "petty hooliganism" related to the use of offensive language in public. Court officials reported that Ms Karelina was using coarse language, and behaving rudely and defiantly in the presence of other citizens. When the police were called, Ms Karelina allegedly became more agitated, ignored their commands, and resisted arrest violently.

Following this, on January 29, she was found guilty of hooliganism and received a 14-day jail sentence. Despite filing a complaint about her arrest the next day, the court rejected it. Subsequently, she faced charges under Article 275 of Russia's Criminal Code, carrying a potential sentence ranging from 12 years to life imprisonment.

Ms Karelina's former mother-in-law, Eleonora Srebroski, told the NY Post, “We are all in shock. She is just a wonderful soul. She would never do anything evil to anyone.” “Knowing Ksenia, she would never do anything criminal. Her mom and dad had recently divorced and she wanted to see the family,” said Ms Srebroski. “She was supposed to be back by now. My son was calling her, and when we found out what had happened, we have all been in shock. He told me this morning ‘let's think what we can do to help her.' We don't want to cause her any trouble.” 

Ksenia Karelina now faces treason charges for allegedly transferring $51.80 from a US bank account to Razom. The organisation states its mission as "contributing to the establishment of a secure, prosperous, and democratic Ukraine," according to information available on its website.

Treason accusations in Russia carry severe consequences, with heavy jail terms being imposed. Since 2023, a total of 63 people have faced prosecution on charges of treason, and 37 of them have been found guilty.
