Review: Crime, Family Dynamics Fusion Makes Shehar Lakhot Watchable

In Shehar Lakhot, a neo-noir crime drama series peppered with dark humour and atmospherics that evoke the heat and dust of the location, director and showrunner Navdeep Singh (NH 10, Laal Kaptaan) returns to the fictional town in Rajasthan where his critically acclaimed 2007 debut film, Manorama Six Feet Under, was set.

The long-format exercise is a far cry (in terms of both substance and style) from the thriller that Singh made 16 years ago but it does yield substantial dividends. However, there is so much going on in the series that the murky, messy history of the marble mining town that the script seeks to dive into is often lost in a dense haze of opacity.

Shehar Lakhot does not possess the depth and range of either Dahaad or Kohrra, but the show rustles up an array of characters that grab instant attention owing to the absorbing arcs that the script by Singh and Devika Bhagat is able to etch out for them.

The eight-part Amazon Prime Video show revolves around a man who calls himself a negotiator (he is not a fixer, he emphasises) and has a past that he is determined to live down. But circumstances conspire to bring him face to face with the realties that he wants to run away from.

The tetchy protagonist, Devendra Singh Tomar (played with restraint by Priyanshu Painyuli), reluctantly makes his way back to his hometown in an SUV that his boss gifted to a demanding young mistress who wants her car back in one piece. He left Lakhot a decade ago and isn't sure it is a good idea to return.

Such is the terrain that the vehicle that Dev drives, the family that he tries to reconnect with and the job that he has been sent to Lakhot for - ending a blockade of a marble mine by an agitated local tribe that has lived on the land for centuries - cause him and others no end of grief.

A local activist Vikas Kachdaar (Chandan Roy) - he has a doctoral thesis on the social impact of mining under his belt - leads the protestors. He is the man that Dev negotiates with. But progress is painfully slow because Vikas refuses to abandon either the cause he espouses or the people he leads.

Lakhot is poised on the verge of a development boom - a road is being built from the city to Kota and the inauguration of a new marble mine promises to open avenues of growth for its denizens - but its small-town ambience is hard to dispel.

Shehar Lakhot kicks off with the discovery of a White woman's body buried in a dry, dusty, desolate piece of land. Pallavi (Kubbra Sait) of the Lakhot police station's women cell ferrets around for clues even as the officer-in-charge Rajbir Rangot (Manu Rishi Chadha) wants her to close the case and move on. But she, the sole woman in a male-dominated police outpost, is persistent.

Each episode of Shehar Lakhot is nearly an hour long, with the final one clocking a minute over 70 minutes. The series inevitably feels stretched and taxing at times. The writers are under constant pressure to keep the less effective passages from sticking out too prominently and undermining the impact of the series as a whole.

But the parts and elements of the twisted tale that work - a few of the characters in particular and Dev's complex relationships with his father (Gyan Prakash), elder brother Jayendra (Kashyap Shangari), sister-in-law Vidushi (Shruti Jolly) and Sandhya (Shruthy Menon), the girlfriend he left behind without so much as a by-your-leave - generate intrigue and suspense.

Shehar Lakhot has three characters outside Dev's immediate orbit who add layers to the narrative - besides the smarmy cop Rajbir and the assiduous Pallavi, there is the unapologetically wicked Kairav Singh (Chandan Roy Sanyal).

Kairav owns the marble mine that he claims will change Lakhot forever. He lives in a sprawling castle that doubles up as a heritage hotel where a slew of unseemly secrets lies buried.

The mendacities and treacheries, the shenanigans of politicians and policemen, the deceit and deadly conspiracies, the conspiracies and betrayals flow thick and fast once the series gathers steam and plunges into an abyss of amorality.

The male protagonist stands his ground despite being repeatedly roughed up. A tragedy compels him to dodge the law and vicious pursuers, among whom is a duo of siblings, Bhi (Manjiri Pupala) and Bho (Sanjay Shiv Narayan), who work for Kairav.

Bhi, who wields a bow and arrow with as proficiently as she handles firearms, is one of many women in Shehar Lakhot whose survival instincts border on the uncanny, resting as they do on the kind of meanness that stems of toxic masculinity. But not every woman in the series is her replica.

Pallavi and Bhi represent two different worlds just as Sandhya and Vidushi do. Pallavi and Vidushi are good friends. The former is anything but feminine - a reflection of who she is in a man's world; the latter is a docile, soft-spoken homemaker who comes into her own when secrets begin to tumble out of her husband's closet.

Sandhya's troubles are the most daunting. She is caught between two bickering, poles-apart brothers and between a man who wants to have Lakhot all to himself and another prodigal who wants to get away from it as soon as he can.

Alternating between the fascinating and the mechanical, Shehar Lakhot throws a few punches that land but it would have benefitted immensely from a shorter runtime. Is it good enough for a binge? It is because there is much in the series that goes beyond the limits of the genre.

The first-rate performances by an effectively edgy Priyanshu Painyuli, an understatedly beguiling Kubbra Sait, a consistent Manu Rishi Chadha and a superlatively classy Chandan Roy Sanyal (superb), the fusion of crime, politics, police work and family dynamics in an environment in which nothing is what it seems, and the evocation of a lawless town in flux combine to make Shehar Lakhot watchable for the most part.

If only the series had not demanded such a huge chunk of our time, it would have been another story. A leaner structure would have made a huge difference to the show's overall impact.

Jasprit Bumrah Cryptic "Silence" Post Breaks The Internet Amid Rumours

The Indian cricket team's failure to go the distance in the Cricket World Cup 2023 hasn't been easy on the top stars. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, etc are yet to break their silence on the team's defeat to Australia in the final. As cricket fans continue to wait for their heroes to open up, Bumrah took to Instagram to share a cryptic story that has had concerned fans scratching their heads.

Bumrah was among India's top performers in the World Cup but even he had a forgettable final against Australia, with Travis Head's century ending India's dream of lifting the ODI World Cup after 12 years.

About 10 days from the conclusion of the final, Burmah took to Instagram and shared a cryptic story, leaving the fans bewildered and concerned. Some fans also connected Bumrah's post with the forthcoming IPL 2024 auction.

"Silence is sometimes the best answer", Bumrah's Instagram story read.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

It isn't often that fans in Indian cricket see Bumrah coming up with such posts. It isn't yet clear what Bumrah intends to say with the post. It could be a response from the superstar cricketer to the social media chatter around his silence on India's failure to win the World Cup. Fans, however, are a little concerned.

After India's World Cup campaign ended, Bumrah was rested for the 5-match T20I series against Australia. In the marquee pacer's absence, the selectors went with rookie players like, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, and Avesh Khan.

As India's youngsters test themselves against Australia, questions have been raised over the future of certain senior players. At present, there's little clarity over the future of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, etc. in the shortest format of the game.

As for Bumrah, though he isn't a part of the Australia T20I series, there's no doubt over his return in the forthcoming assignments. Bumrah is likely to be seen in action for India as the team flies to South Africa for a Test series.

"Supreme Court Has Acted As A People's Court": Chief Justice Of India

The Supreme Court has acted as a "people's court" and citizens should not be afraid of going to courts or view it as the last resort, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud said on Sunday.

Justice Chandrachud said just as the Constitution allows us to resolve political differences through established democratic institutions and processes, the court system helps in resolving many disagreements through established principles and processes.

"In this way, every case in every court in the country is an extension of constitutional governance," the CJI said while speaking at the inauguration of the Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court.

President Droupadi Murmu delivered the inaugural address at the programme, which was also attended by Supreme Court judges Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and others.

In his address, the CJI said, "In the last seven decades, the Supreme Court of India has acted as a people's court. Thousands of citizens have approached its doors with the faith that they will get justice through this institution".

He said citizens come to court to seek the protection of their personal liberty, accountability against unlawful arrests, protection of rights of bonded labourers, tribals seeking protection of their homelands, prevention of social evils such as manual scavenging and even hoping for interference to get clean air.

"These cases are not just citations or statistics for the court. These cases resemble the expectations of people from the Supreme Court as well as the court's own commitment to deliver justice to the citizens," Justice Chandrachud said.

He said the Supreme Court was perhaps the only court in the world where any citizen can set in motion the constitutional machinery of the Supreme Court simply by writing to the CJI.

Apart from ensuring that citizens get justice through its judgements, the Supreme Court has been making continuous endeavours to ensure that its administrative processes are citizen-centric so that people feel the connection with the working of courts, he said.

While highlighting the steps taken for dealing with the issue of overcrowding in prisons which was flagged by the President on Constitution Day last year, the CJI said the goal behind these initiatives was to ensure that people feel that the constitutional institution of judiciary was working for them.

"Individuals should not be afraid of going to courts or view it as the last resort. Rather it is my hope that by our efforts, citizens of every class, caste and creed can repose trust in our court system and view it as a fair and effective forum to enforce the rights," he said.

"Sometimes, we as a society may frown on litigation as a disreputable entanglement. But just as the Constitution allows us to resolve our political differences through established democratic institutions and processes, our court system helps resolve our many disagreements through established principles and processes," he said.

Justice Chandrachud said courts were now live-streaming their proceedings and this decision was taken with a view that citizens should know what was happening inside courtrooms.

"Constant media reporting about proceedings of courts indicates the engagement of the public with the working of the courtrooms," he said, adding, that the top court also took a decision to translate its verdicts to regional languages with the help of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning.

"As of November 25, 2023, the Supreme Court has delivered 36,068 judgements in English from the date of its first sitting. But proceedings in our district courts are not conducted in English," he said.

The CJI said all of these judgements were available for free on the e-SCR platform, which was launched in January this year.

"Today, we are launching the e-SCR in Hindi as 21,388 judgements have been translated into Hindi, vetted and uploaded on the e-SCR portal," he said.

Besides, 9,276 verdicts as of last evening have been translated into other Indian languages, including Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali and Urdu, he said.

Talking about technology and its use by the judiciary, he spoke about the launch of 'e-sewa kendras' in all courts to ensure that no citizen was left behind in the judicial process.

"Technology is not meant to distance us from our citizens but to take us into the lives of our citizens. We embrace our citizens as co-equal partners in a shared national endeavour," he said.

The CJI said on Constitution Day last year, the President had raised concerns over overcrowding of prisons and incarceration of citizens from marginalised backgrounds.

"...I want to assure you (President) that we are constantly working to ensure that legal processes become easier and simplified so that citizens don't languish in jails unnecessarily," he said.

Justice Chandrachud said version 2.0 of the Fast and Secured Transmission of Electronic Records (FASTER) application would be launched Sunday and it ensures that judicial order of release of a person was immediately transferred to jail authorities, district courts and high courts via electronic means so that person was released on time.

The CJI said he has also tasked the Centre for Research and Planning of the Supreme Court to come up with a project to improve the conditions of jails and to improve on obsolete prison manuals.

Planes Losing GPS Signal Over Middle-East, Indian Regulator Raises Concern

Concerned over reports that civilian aircrafts may sometimes be flying blind over parts of the Middle East, the civil aviation regulator DGCA has issued an advisory to all Indian airlines. There have been several reports in recent days that navigation systems of civilian aircrafts are being spoofed when they fly over parts of the Middle East. This is fast emerging as a major safety hazard and the DGCA advisory aims to alert airlines of the nature of the threat and how to respond to it.

"The aviation industry is grappling with uncertainties due to new threats and reports of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) jamming and spoofing," the circular states.

The report takes note of "increasing reports of GNSS interference over airspace in the Middle East in the recent past" and calls for the development of contingency measures to deal with the jamming of navigation systems. The DGCA has also sought the creation of a threat monitoring and analysis network.

In late September, multiple commercial flights near Iran went off-course after their navigation systems went blind. One of the aircraft, which fell victim to spoofing, ended up almost flying into Iranian airspace without permission.

According to OpsGroup, a group of professional pilots, flight dispatchers, schedulers, and controllers have flagged the issue.

How Does The Spoofing Work?

The planes flying over parts of the Middle East initially receive a spoofed GPS signal. This signal is aimed at fooling the aircraft's in-built system into thinking that they are flying miles away from their intended route. The signal is often strong enough to compromise the integrity of the aircraft's system.

The result is that within minutes, the inertial reference system (IRS) becomes unstable and in many cases, the plane loses all navigation capability.

Which Are The Areas Of Concern?

The primary area of concern is a busy airway in Northern Iraq and Azerbaijan with several incidents being reported near Erbil.

By September, 12 separate incidents had been reported with the latest one being reported near Ankara, Turkey on November 20.

Who Is The Culprit?

While no one culprit has been identified, it is believed that jamming and spoofing may be happening because of the deployment of military electronic warfare systems in areas where there is regional tension.

What Does The DGCA Circular Recommend?

The DGCA circular is based on recommendations of the committee for tackling the emerging threat considering the best practices, latest developments, and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidance on the matter.

It provides comprehensive mitigation measures and action plans for aircraft operators, pilots, ANSP, and air traffic controllers which includes the development of contingency procedures in coordination with equipment manufacturers, and the assessment of operational risk by conducting a safety risk assessment.

It also provides a mechanism to establish a threat monitoring and analysis network in close coordination with DGCA for preventive as well as reactive threat monitoring and analysis of reports of GNSS interference to generate valuable insights with data and new developments so as to have robust and immediate threat response.

Animal Trailer: Goodfellas Ranbir And Bobby Deol In A Revenge Saga

Ranbir Kapoor, in the trailer of Animal, is fierce, unapologetic and hellbent of seeking revenge for the shooting of his father. The trailer of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film released on Thursday and it is as intense as you can imagine it to be. The trailer showcases Ranbir Kapoor's troubled relationship with his father Balbir (played by Anil Kapoor) and how it changes (for better or worse). Ranbir Kapoor's character has idolised his father ever since childhood but his love has never been reciprocated. It would be fair to say that Ranbir's villain arc begins at home.

Geetanjali (Rashmika Mandanna)'s love has nothing on the bond Ranbir has with his father and he does everything in his control to showcase his love to his dad and get his validation - even if it requires him to take a violent path. "You are fighting a ghost in your head," Rashmika tells Ranbir at one point but he just won't stop. As Ranbir channels his inner animal, any sign of mercy leaves the room. The shooting of his father only makes matters worse for Ranbir, who has only one goal - to seek revenge and his primary target is, wait for it...Bobby Deol. The video ends with some high octane action sequences between Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol.

Check out the trailer of Animal here:

Earlier, Animal was slated to release on August 11 this year and it would have clashed with Sunny Deol's Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi's OMG 2. However, the makers shifted the film's release date to December this year. Gadar 2 was a smash hit at the box office, while OMG 2 was moderately successful.

Directed by Arjun Reddy director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, other than Ranbir Kapoor, Animal also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. The film is slated to release on December 1.

Zerodha's Nithin Kamath Questions Why Young Indians Are Still Moving To US

Indians have a significant presence in the United States and have risen to become the richest ethnicity in the country. Every year, tens of thousands of young Indians move to the US for better growth and opportunities, and pursue the 'American Dream'. However, Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath questioned the trend at a time when India's economy is booming. In what he termed a ''dichotomy'', he stated while many rich Americans want to invest in India, young Indians prefer to move to the US.

''Most Americans I know with money want to invest in India because they believe they are plateauing as a nation and that we are the future. But somehow, young Indians are still bitten by the bug to travel to America to build their future. This is such a dichotomy,'' he wrote on X.

He also shared a graph from 'The Open Doors 2023' report on International Educational Exchange that shows India is a leading "sender of students" to the US.

See the tweet here:

As per the report, India has surpassed China to become the largest source of international graduate students in the United States. Notably, the number of Indians pursuing postgraduate studies in the US increased 63 percent to 1.65 lakh in the academic year 2022-23 — surpassing China for the first time in 15 years.

While a few resonated with Mr. Kamath's thoughts, majority of internet users disagreed with him. One user wrote, ''Americans placing their bets on India's economic roulette wheel, while young Indians roll the dice in the American dream. It's a high-stakes game of aspirations, where the roulette wheel spins, and dreams roll across borders.''

Another commented, ''Americans investing in India for monetary rewards Indian students escaping India for lifestyle rewards. two things are not same & there is no dichotomy.'' A third wrote, ''USA is still the land of opportunities. A nobody can become something ..this is the essence of anyone wanting to go...there is nothing wrong. Learn and come back and build. Others did and why not the next generation ??''

A fourth said, ''The desire for a better lifestyle and the pursuit of ego satisfaction drives this craze of settling in West, but what they fail to acknowledge is that high living costs will lead to a less fulfilling life and major loneliness once the initial excitement fades. Also, later they crave Indian cuisine and the social life.''

A fifth added, ''There is no dichotomy, people just want a better life. On average a middle-income person has a far better quality of life outside. None of those NRIs would wanna come back to India, they just want to participate in the so-called Alpha.''

Notably, India had the largest diaspora population in the world with 18 million people from the country living outside their homeland in 2020, according to a report by the United Nations.

"Buying Australia?" What Satya Nadella Said When Asked About India's Loss

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is a cricket fan. He was among the millions of cricket fans glued to their screens on Wednesday, witnessing India's commanding 70-run victory over New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final. However, India lost to Australia in the finals and this broke the hearts of millions of Indian cricket team's fans and supporters. Amid this, Mr Nadella was asked if he was planning to buy Australia after India's loss. This comes as Microsoft made the announcement to hire Sam Altman, who was fired from his position as the CEO of OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft.

He made an appearance on Kara Swisher's podcast and discussed the dramatic weekend at OpenAI. During the interview, the host asked the Microsoft CEO about the World Cup loss."The India and Australia cricket thing, I'm so sorry for you there, but are you thinking of buying Australia now?" the host jokingly asked him. To this, Mr Nadella said, "That would be like buying OpenAI. None of those can be accomplished, but we can partner well with OpenAI and enjoy Aussies playing cricket."

Satya Nadella had closely watched the final match of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup. In a post on X, he congratulated the Aussies and appreciated the hard work of the Rohit Sharma-led team. "Congratulations to Australia on winning the World Cup! Great run to the finals, India," he said.

The Microsoft Chief has been vocal about his love for cricket and stated that the sport taught him teamwork and leadership that helped him rise through the twists and turns of the corporate world. "I think playing cricket taught me more about working in teams and leadership that has stayed with me throughout my career," he said after his appointment as Microsoft CEO was announced.

Meanwhile, Announcing Microsoft's move to hire the former OpenAI Chief, Mr Nadella posted on X, "We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them."

With this move, Microsoft's shares rose about 1.5%, with the company on track to add nearly $30 billion to its market value at current levels. That was nearly equal to the valuation OpenAI commanded in its last fundraise.

"They Reek Of Perversion": Chiranjeevi On Comments By Mansoor About Trisha

Actor Mansoor Ali Khan's distasteful remarks about his Leo co-star, actress Trisha Krishnan, have drawn criticism and ire from all quarters. After the likes of Leo director Lokesh Kanagaraj, singer Chinmayi Sripada, and actress Malavika Mohanan, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi has strongly condemned Mansoor Ali Khan's comments. The legend, in a post on X [formerly Twitter], shared that Mansoor's comments “reek of perversion”. In his message, Chiranjeevi said, “My attention was drawn to some reprehensible comments made by actor Mansoor Ali Khan about Trisha.  The comments are distasteful and disgusting not just for an Artiste but for any woman or girl. These comments must be condemned in the strongest words. They reek of perversion. I stand with Trisha  and every woman who has to be subject to such horrid comments.”

The message was reposted by Trisha with the note, “Thank you Chiru Sir.”

For the unversed, during a video interview in Tamil, Mansoor Ali Khan said, “When I heard that I was acting with Trisha, I thought there would be a bedroom scene in the film. I thought that I could carry her to the bedroom just like I did with other actresses in my earlier movies. I have done so many rape scenes in a number of movies and it's not new to me. But these guys didn't even show Trisha to me on the sets during the Kashmir schedule,” as per ANI.

Reacting to the video, Trisha wrote, “A recent video has come to my notice where Mr Mansoor Ali Khan has spoken about me in a vile and disgusting manner. I strongly condemn this and find it sexist, disrespectful, misogynistic, repulsive and in bad taste. He can keep wishing but I am grateful never to have shared screen space with someone as pathetic as him and I will make sure it never happens for the rest of my film career as well. People like him bring a bad name to mankind.”

After outrage over the interview grew louder, Mansoor Ali Khan issued a statement that said: “Ah… My kids informed me that they had heard on the news that I had mistreated Trisha in the press meet. To be honest, I complimented her at that press conference. In Leo, Trisha is treated similarly to how Hanuman moved the mountain Chiranjeevi. I made the comment in jest. Some have purposefully sliced it and presented it to Trisha in an alternative format. I am not the kind of person who is afraid of all this fuss. Today, politicians in prominent positions are among the heroines who have collaborated with me. Several of the heroines settled down and married wealthy businessmen.”

Adding that his daughter is a Trisha fan, Mansoor Ali Khan said, “My daughter Dil Rupa is a huge fan of yours. I also have two more daughters. They want to get married. I have to support that. Those who have acted with me know very well how I respect women. Some people have angered Trisha by misrepresenting this. There is much work to be done in the world. So, focus on your work. Thank you!”

However, social media users have expressed disappointment with Mansoor Ali Khan over his initial statements and the subsequent explanation. While the Tamil film industry's Nadigar Sangam has temporarily banned Mansoor Ali Khan, he has refused to apologise to Trisha for his comments.

Leo, headlined by Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha, was released in theatres on October 19. Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi and Trisha have worked together in the 2006 film Stalin.

Markandey Katju's Bizarre Remark On India-Australia Match Shocks Internet

Ever since India lost the Cricket World Cup final against Australia, experts have been analysing the reasons behind it. From India's batting performance to slip-ups in fielding, people have been giving reasons for the unbeaten Rohit Sharma-led side's slide in fortune. But former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has offered one of the most bizarre reasons and his post has gone viral because of that. Justice Katju claimed that Australia was the armoury of India in the time of Pandavas and that is why it won the match.

"Australia was the storage centre of the 'Astras' of Pandavas. It was called 'Astralaya'. This is the real reason why they won the World Cup," Justice Katju said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He did not give any proof or context for the bizarre theory, leaving internet shocked.

"Thank u sir... It's been a while since u honoured us with your humour," commented one user. "Dubai was made by Mr Dubey, Egypt (Misr in Hindi) by Mr Mishra, Israel was created by Yadavs, Bahrain by Lord Brahma and Saudi Arabia by Goddess Saraswati," said another user, taking a jibe at Justice Katju.

Justice Katju, also a former chairman of the Press Council of India, is known for his outspoken views and unconventional opinions. Justice Katju started his law practice at the Allahabad High Court from 1970 to 1991 and served at various high-ranking positions in the judiciary before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in April 2006. He retired in September, 2011.

Meanwhile, the loss on Sunday was also India's second loss to the Australians in a final in five months, after they went down in the World Test Championship decider in June.

India won the one-day World Cup in 1983 and 2011, but then faltered at the semi-final stage in 2015 and 2019.

Here's Why Anand Mahindra Is Not Watching The India Vs Australia Match

Excitement is at its peak as the ICC Cricket World Cup final is underway at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Notably, Australia skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bowl against India in the final match of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday. Rohit Sharma and Co are going ahead with the same team which featured against New Zealand in the semi-final. The high-voltage grand finale clash is being witnessed by lakhs of fans at the jam-packed Narendra Modi Stadium. Meanwhile, millions of Indians are glued to their TV screens and phones, and cheering for Team India.

However, industrialist Anand Mahindra declared on social media that he was not planning on watching the match. He said that this act would be his "service to the nation". Further, the businessman said he would be donning his India jersey and secluding himself in a hermetically sealed chamber, awaiting updates on the game's outcome.

He wrote, ''No, no, I am not planning to watch the match (my service to the nation ) But I will, indeed, be wearing this jersey and installing myself in a hermetically sealed chamber with no contact with the outside world until someone knocks and tells me we've won.''

See the post here:

Notably, Mr Mahindra's declaration is rooted in superstition. He believes that Team India loses when he watches the match live. On several occasions, his followers have also urged him not to watch crucial matches to increase India's chances of winning.

One user wrote, ''Wow. This is also the best way to be with Team India and support it wholeheartedly. Although it may be a very painful act, it will be worth it once you see the winning trophy."

Another commented, ''You are our unsung hero. History may not remember your sacrifice, but we all will continue to spread news. Let's go India. Let's make 19 Nov 23 historical day.''

A third wrote, ''All this is myth sir. Watch the match like any other bharatiya. You deserve to watch the match like anybody else. Enjoy the match. Let the best team win.''

A fourth added, ''Ha ha every Indian follow some totka to win the match probably whenever you see matches it must have lost . Anyway enjoy the match I am sure sports will win the hearts for sure and that is what required.''

The World Cup takes place every four years and is one of the most anticipated tournaments among cricket fans. This is the 13th edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup since it started in 1975.

Body Of Soldier Murdered By Hamas Found, She Was Only 19: Israel

A 19-year-old Israeli woman soldier who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 has been found murdered, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in a post on X today.

The IDF said the body of Corporal Noa Marciano was found next to Shifa Hopspital in Gaza Strip.

Israel has accused Hamas of using civilian buildings like schools and hospitals to build tunnels, reinforced shelters and weapon storage. The IDF has released many visuals from such structures to prove its allegations against the Hamas.

"19 year old CPL Noa Marciano was abducted and murdered by Hamas terrorists on October 7. Her body was found and extracted by IDF troops adjacent to the Shifa Hospital in Gaza. The IDF sends its heartfelt condolences to the family and will continue to support them," the IDF said in a post, which has a photo of the murdered soldier.

Earlier today, the IDF said another 65-year-old hostage and mother of five children was found murdred next to the hospital in Gaza.

Yehudit Weiss, 65, "was murdered by the terrorists in the Gaza Strip and we didn't manage to reach her in time," IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said. Hamas killed her husband on October 7, the same day Hamas kidnapped and took her to Gaza.

The IDF also posted more videos of Hamas' tunnels under three of the largest hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

"Exposing another layer of Hamas' exploitation of three of the largest hospitals in Gaza. Inside the Shifa Hospital complex, a Hamas terrorist tunnel was uncovered... Inside the Rantisi Hospital, yet another terrorist tunnel was unearthed by IDF troops... Inside the Al-Quds Hospital, a large amount of weaponry and ammunition were found. This was all found over the past 24 hours," the IDF said in a thread on X.

Israeli troops continued carrying out building-by-building searches at Gaza's main hospital, as a new communications blackout today compounded fears for Palestinian civilians trapped inside the facility.

Al-Shifa hospital has become a focal point for Israeli operations in northern Gaza since soldiers raided the complex on Wednesday, hunting for a command centre they say Hamas operates there.

Hamas and hospital managers deny that charge, and there has been international concern about several thousand people -- including wounded patients and premature babies -- believed to be trapped inside.

Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas in response to the group's October 7 attack, which killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and saw about 240 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.

"Our Boat Is Sinking": 75-Year-Old Woman Dies After Ferry Sinks In Bahamas

On Tuesday near the Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas, a double-decker tour boat sank due to large waves, resulting in the unfortunate death of a 75-year-old Colorado woman, while two other individuals were transported to the hospital, Fox News reported.

"Our boat is sinking ... so that's fun," Kelly Schissel could be heard saying in a video she posted to TikTok. "Everybody's freaking out." The video which is now going viral on other social media platforms shows people wearing life vests screaming and jumping into the water as the boat lifted to one side.

The ferry was nearing the island but still some distance from the shore, as mentioned by Ms Schissel in another video. She expressed her belief that the captain was attempting to add a playful touch by swiftly turning the boat's end while manoeuvring into the Blue Lagoon area.

"Then all of a sudden we kinda hear people kind of freaking out a little bit," she said as passengers on the top deck where she was began wondering what was going on.

The moment she looked down, she noticed water coming onto the boat.

"One of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, freaking out, absolutely bawling, grabbing a life jacket," she said.

She noted that a significant number of passengers on board were anticipating instructions from the tour boat staff on what actions to take. However, she asserts that such guidance was never provided as the staff seemed preoccupied with panicking themselves.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force received a distress call regarding a double-deck catamaran in distress, experiencing water ingress, shortly before 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday. According to a statement from the police, the catamaran was carrying tourists from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island, a well-known private island and tourist hotspot, NBC reported.

Responding to the situation, units from the Police Marine Support and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force promptly arrived and assisted in the rescue of passengers and crew members "from the visibly sinking vessel," as outlined in the official release.

According to a statement released online from Blue Lagoon Island, the passengers on board the ferry were from a cruise ship.

"Passengers and five staff members were located and brought to the island, and two passengers were taken to the hospital for additional care," the statement continues.

"I support India, my wife is from Hyderabad. India will reach the final and lift the trophy...All the players in Team India are good. Right down to number 7, they are top players...I wanted an India vs Pakistan match (in the semi-final) but they (Pakistan) did not play well," he told ANI.

See the post here:

Mr Bashir also said that if India wins the toss on Wednesday, they should look to bat first and put runs on the board.

"India should take batting first, play well, score 350-400 runs and then there are top Indian bowlers (to defend it)," he said.

Under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, Team India displayed a commanding performance in every match. The Indian team appears well-balanced, with all facets of their game performing at a high level.

On the other hand, New Zealand experienced a rollercoaster journey in the tournament. Despite an impressive beginning, they faced a setback with four consecutive losses. However, the Kane Williamson-led side rebounded with a victory against Sri Lanka in their last match, securing a spot in the semi-finals.

On "Difference Between Rohit, Other Indian Captains", Gambhir's Blunt Take

With 9 wins in 9 matches, Rohit Sharma's Indian team has left no stone unturned in their bid to win the ODI World Cup after a gap of 12 years. India have been the most dominant side in the league stage of the tournament, going into the semi-finals unbeaten. While there isn't a gigantic difference between the players that were there in the 2019 World Cup, in comparison to 2023, former India star Gautam Gambhir feels it's Rohit's captaincy that has gotten the team to perform at its best.

In a chat on Star Sports, Gambhir pointed out how some of the previous captains who led India didn't quite lead the way Rohit has.

"Look, there is nothing which has changed from 2019 to 2023. There were so many changes that happened in 2019 as compared to the least amount of changes that has happened in 2023. A good captain and leader give you security, which makes the dressing room secure, not only for himself but for the other 14 players as well. And Rohit Sharma has done that. That's why he has won five IPL trophies; that's where his winning ratio when he started playing all those international games has been fabulous. If you go by the stats and the trophies, he ticks all the boxes. But the most important thing is he has made that dressing room a very secure dressing room.

"When the captain comes out and talks in his post-match presentation that he believes in his players and gives them longer runs, it makes you believe how much your captain is backing you. And that is the difference between Rohit Sharma as a leader, compared to some other captains that have captained previously for India," Gambhir said in a chat on Star Sports.

Australia great Matthew Hayden, who was also a part of the chat, highlighted the 'aggressive mindset' Rohit has brought to the Indian team.

"Rohit Sharma has been really aggressive in this World Cup tournament. When you think about the mindset of what that means for his side, one is he has made the batting look easy, and two is he has a strike rate of 130 inside the powerplay. That has allowed the middle order, especially Virat Kohli, to just set out and put on that computer brain of his and work out exactly what needs to happen. He's been a marquee player for India for some time, missed out in 2011, mind you, come 2023 he is not missing out," said Hayden.
